Deke is slow and can't really jump yet he always seems to be getting 10 boards and three blocks. There are times when yao only gets like 6 boards. Why can't yao copy some of deke's technique.

because he didn't know how to play offense...just box out, and get in postion, and prepare to rebound...

Yao loses focus on his rebounding sometimes though, you know that we he starts tiping rebounds instead of grabbing them

It has to do with mental approach and also energy level.

Also, while Deke isn't particular mobile and he's not a great leaper any more, he still gets off the ground pretty quickly. He's got long arms and sharp elbows, which always helps. I think Yao has trouble boxing out smaller, quicker players sometimes.

Mutombo is truly one of the great rebounders in the history of the game, if you go by rebound-rate. That he's rebounding as well as he ever has at age 40 is astounding, but I'm not surprised he's a better rebounder than Yao.

I have been wondering the same thing. It just seems like there are fewer people around Dikembe than are around Yao. It could be because Dikembe isn't double-teamed or it could be because Dikembe has about 30 people-shaped tattoos on his arm of his knockout victims :D Those elbows are legendary.

This thread can't be serious. You haven't noticed the difference in leaping ability and better agility of Dikembe?

Yao is not athletic which makes his domination even more impressive.

Yao can't jump over a phonebook, but he's fundamentally perfect and he's big.

Plus Dikembe can devote a lot more energy on defense. When Yao gets tired, bring in Deke and make Tmac the focal point of the offense. We would dominate every night

Yao gets rebounds because of his size, but he is not a particularly skilled rebounder. Yao sometimes tips the ball and loses it instead of pulling it down strong with authority, and he isn't always in the best position to get rebs, and he is still young, Mutombo has been in the league 15 yrs and is just a more skilled rebounder and is stronger inside defensively and on the boars. And Yao is the most offensively skilled big-man to come along since Olaujuwon. So I'll take is less than great rebounding.

Definitely the elbows. Yao should have razor blades inserted into his while he's recovering from the knee injury.

One relatively small - but highly amusing - factor is that Juwon Howard steals rebounds from Yao, but Deke doesn't let him.

Sometime, just watch Howard. You can tell he's a total stat hound. He really does try to steal rebounds every chance he gets.

yeah come on guys. it might be a little bit of technique.

But it's a LOTTA bit of the fact that yao has more people around him usually cause he's the offense a lot. And even MORE that his offensive game set him up on the box...and has him fading, coming across the lane, or at minimum, doing something that has his defender on his back... i.e. in prime position for the board.

Deke on the other hand...will NOT get the ball unless he's wide open. So he just has to bide his time, gain position by the time he thinks the shot will be going up, and voila, he's there for it. There's still a lot of technique, size, and power involved, but I think Yao could do the same thing if that was his only role on the team liek it is Deke's.

maybe deke just has better timing but then yao does like tipping a bit too often...

Yeah, at our game in Washington (I think), he came under Yao for a rebound after a missed free throw. The rebound was coming to Yao with no other players in sight, and JHo just creeps up out of nowhere and steals the rebound. I even heard a loud "Got it Yao" watching it on TV. Made me crack up. LOL

Also, with yao in the lineup, there are less shots/bricks thrown up thus less balls to rebound... the games seem to be played at a faster pace with yao not in the lineup.

tipping in counts as an offensive rebound..
yao just doesnt rebound well because he's just not good at positioning himself or holding on to the ball.. simple as that.

u guys all wrong.. come to rebounding it's all about wingspan.. Deke got incredible wingspan and Yao got relatively short wingspan

I understand there are more people around yao on offensive end, but Mutombo gets a ton of defensive boards. Maybe Mutombo should spend an hour per practice teaching Yao how to rebound. It is one of the weaknesses Yao should try his hardest to eliminate.

Deke is a better rebounder than Yao for the same reason he's a better rebounder than everyone else in the league: he's just that damn good. There's a reason why he's #1 in rebounds per minute. Now ask us why Deke is a better rebounder than Shawn Marion and Dwight Howard. Same answer.

Yao's not a phenomenal rebounder, but he's a phenomenal player. Deke's not much of a scorer, but he's a phenomenal player too. Good to have them both, shortcomings be damned.

    So it's like:
Juwan: [Don't worry, I] Got it Yao!
    :D
