I read his columns weekly. He's one of the few basketball "gurus" I take heed of. These three question and answer tidbits are from today's chat, part of his weekly Q&As. By the way, this just reinforces the idea that we are lucky to have a guy like Tracy on our team, The entire transcript is found here:

    http://transcripts.usatoday.com/Chats/transcript.aspx?c=1008

Philadelphia, PA: Should Tracy McGrady be considered a serious contender for MVP?

David DuPree: Absolutely, I can think of no reason why not, especially the way he has been playing with Yao injured. When Yao comes back and if they both stay healthy, the Rockets are one of the few teams I think that could win it all. Yes, you heard me right.

Los, Angeles CA: You Mr. Dupree, please name the top 5 players in the NBA in order. I know you don't like doing this type of stuff, but please just give it a try, I'm dying to hear what a hoops guru like you thinks on this matter.

David DuPree: You asked for it. A lot of people will hate me for this and accuse me of all sorts of prejudices and everything else, but here you go. The top 5 players in the NBA in order today, in my opinion are: 1. Kobe Bryant 2. Tracy McGrady 3. Steve Nash 4. Dirk Nowitzki 5. Kevin Garnett.

Krakow, Poland: Hello DD! Great chat going on, as usual. Jazz have cooled down recently but they still pley very well. Kudos to you for being the only analyst outside Utah to predict that. You also said they wouldn't win it all. I agree - they miss experience and a reliable go-to-guy . So maybe they should trade for both? Try to get Billups or Cassell type of player? Do you see the need for that and if so, what trade they could hypothetically pursue?

David DuPree: Hello to all of my friends in Krakow. My deceased father-in-law's parents emigrated from Poland a long time ago, so I have always had a fondness for the country and am trying to get my mother-in-law and wife to go with me to see it first hand. Billups, Cassellor and Andre Miller might work wonders for the team playing alongside Deron Williams, but I still don't think that would be enough for them to beat Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio or Houston in a seven game series. But with the young players this team has, it will be a contender for a long time.

    Yeah DD.

While I like reading his columns as well, there is always something you can disagree with when it comes to hoops 'analysts'. For example, take a look at this bit from his chat transcript from last week:
    -----------
Houston, Tx: Dupree, If Yao hadn't been hurt and the rockets had a good run what do you think Yao's shot at the MVP might have been and do you think he has set himself up as the best center in the West???East

David DuPree: I still think you have to count Tim Duncan and Amare Stoudemire as centers, so I'd say Yao is the third best one, but I still love the way he plays. He definitely would have had a shot at the MVP. He still might, for that matter, but it is going to be very difficult for anyone to unseat Steve Nash.

    -------

Now, I don't have too big of an issue with him putting Duncan ahead of Yao, but I still don't get this crush on Amare. That's the bit I wholeheartedly disagree with.

Ehh, he's better than Rosen at least.

LOL, yeah Amare's 17 points and 9 rebounds really overshadow Yao's 27 points and 9 rebounds.

Sorry. Gilbert belongs in the top 5, at the very least in front of KG. To say otherwise is insane. It should be:

    1 Kobe
    2 Nash
    3 Gilbert
    4 Dirk
    5 [Tough choice]

Too bad Yao got injured or he would be in the top 3.

Not that the point that Amare is head and shoulders below Yao, I'd also like to mention that Amare should partially subsidize Nash's contract, as Nash is a huge reason that Amare averages 17 a game.

Bah, that's why you always preview a post. I meant to say, "Not that the point that Amare is head and shoulders below Yao needs any more reinforcement, ...".

It is very difficult to rank individual player, especially when they are all really good. Inevitably, people will ask what about Lebron? Dwyane Wade? Someone is always left out.

At the end of the day, all that matters is who is going lead his team to championship.

no way, Garnett has been in this league more than Gilbert, look at the stats, Garnett has been consistent since he started to play ball....

Gilbert might be in the top 10 0r 15

well he balances out his rocket-love with some yao ming hate.

amare isn't anywhere close to the level yao ming's at. maybe two years ago, but no longer.

If both of them can work on the P&R they did two years ago against Dallas, we will be unstopable offensively, with Tmac dishing.

I agree the Rox are contenders, but top 5, before the injury, Yao would be there...

He was playing even better in terms of overall floor game. Involving everybody

He was playing better defense. His shot was off the first month, but he played great in December with Yao in the lineup

Yeah, he went down with the back spasms right when he was playing his best ball of the season(at least before this recent stretch).

In fact, he was tearing it up in that Wizards game before he got hurt. He's the reason we were still in that game cuz Arenas was unconscious that night.

Aren't we talking about top 5 for THIS YEAR?

If its for this year, then Arenas should definitely be in the conversation.

If that is what you called decent and fair reporting on the Rockets....please !

Dupree gave mad props to Tmac right now because Tmac is tearing it up. Where were the mad props for Yao when Yao was tearing it up?

If you want to give some props to Dupree, feel free to do so but you're not gonna get it from me.

Any writers whose failed to recognize Yao's greatness and still considered him as the third best center got to have some creditability issue.

I couldn't be happier if Tmac received the props and accolades, he deserved it because of his dominance since he got healthier.

But when the so called"fair and balance" writer like Dupree still finds a way to diminish what Yao has accomplished so far, YEAH I got a problem with that!

some of the article was good, but what was that BS that amare is better. I fail to see how Amare is better than Yao. Most if not all of Amare points come from easy pick and rolls or nash driving in and kicking it to him for easy dunks. I cant even recall the last time Amare posted anyone or commanded a double team. He is an unbelievable athlete, but he is fortunate to play along side Nash.
