Damn boys, Oink has rendered my massive collection obsolete. I had been saving digital files since the original Napster craze. Thousand and thousands of files: all the Motown hits , the Chess Hits, heyday of rock and the history of blues ....but they definitly are not lossless files. Every song needs it's own EQ tweak and they never sound 'bright' when you burn them and play them on CD's. So right in the middle of my archiving project, I think 4854 songs I wanted to keep permanently on my 30G MP3 player, I am thinking about scraping the whole thing and starting over with FLAC and OGG files. I've got probably 3000 hours in this collection, if I have saved 5000 nuggets I've probably downloaded and disgarded 10,000 more. I guess I will actually finish and load what I have and then work in the future to replace as much as I can with lossless files but my enthusiasm has taken a big hit. Oh well, I guess that's what hobbies are for...filling up the lonley hours... but refurbishing is never as fun as the original construction.
Hey somebody that's a power user on Oink, what is the most popular downloads so I can seed it and get my ratio up. (since my transcode collection is worthless to upload )
All you gotta do is click on Torrents and then click the leecher icon (the down arrow) for it to filter by most leechers. Its currently that Rosetta Stone language pack thing. Lots of false positives, if the comments are to be believed.
up to a whopping .78! Thanks for tip Lynus, I'll try The Shins I actually have a bunch of classic blues CD's that I didn't see on the Oink listings. When I get back from the blues cruise on the 21st. I'll have time to rip and post them.
yeah goodluck with the shins, i dowloaded that over a week ago and had it seeding since... not a single bit of upload
No prob. I'm trying The Shins as well. I'm hesitant to grab some of the bigger files; I don't want to kill my ratio, which is currently @ .96 prior to DL-ing the shins. I want that Rosetta Stone software, one of which is a whopping 18gigs. Someone help me out here: I tried only DL-ing the Spanish, but uTorrent still showed it was giving me credit for an 18gig DL. Will my ratio take a hit for all 18gigs if I only DL the Spanish? (I've currently stopped the torrent.) I also saw some big-ass Star Wars audio book torrents that I'd like at 10gigs....the ratio business has me scared to DL those friggin' biggies, though.
That's a super easy way to build up your ratio. Just rip a cd to flac/lossless (since those files are bigger and there's a pretty solid niche audience that prefers really high quality files), get even one or two leechers and your ratio zooms up.
For the 18 gig dl, just make sure that you set all the other files that you don't want to "do not download". That's the important thing. And that 18 gig dl number is probably the size of the whole thing. You'll want to add the "remaining" column on your bar to see how much it's going to dl: Also a trick I use with checking "false positives" and how many actual downloading leechers are on a torrent is to check the detailed seeders and leechers list. I count how many leechers have a big download speed. Those are the actual leechers on a torrent. On the Rosetta stone torrent, there's about 10 actual leechers out of that 400.
I downloaded that Rosetta program during the free download week. Now my ratio is up to 13.25 now But another tip is that alot of more mainstream albums such as the Shins are available on free torrent sites such as www.btjunkie.org You can save on your Oink ratio by downloading from those free sites, and leave the truly hard to find material for Oink.
Kinda late to the thread, but I would love an invite if anyone have one to spare. I've used torrents before and is well aware of the problem with leeching. I've always seed to at least 2:1 ratio (u/d) before killing a seed. My computer is up 90% of the time. TIA. moonbus@lycos.com
