2 stories here. The first one was leaked prematurely and is no longer available, but some sites provide a recap of what it said:

For those unfamilar with IPTV, here's the Wiki link for more info:

Pretty cool stuff...I think I saw a demo of it by MS a year or two ago at CES. They'll probably show off more of it in a few days during their CES keynote (or at some event).

    Now the HDMI+120GB stuff...
    http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/05/the-second-xbox-360-revealed-codename-zephyr/
The HDMI part, at the very least, seems legit judging from the following:

I think the transition to 65nm is scheduled for the middle of the year for the 360.

So, I guess this is going to make my launch 360 obsolete at some point.

Damn, why do they do this stuff?

I had to get a second XBOX and PS2 because, at some point, they stopped being able to play newer games in which only newer models could read.

This is the only way I see that I'm going to be able to fully take advantage of all the new features is to have to eventually buy a whole new system.

All this, coupled with the degree of difficulty and the risk of glitches, has tought me never to buy at launch.

I'm confused. They want to change the specs on the 360 and still call it the 360? Why don't they just call it the XBox 540? What would be the point of an existing 360 owner buying a HDMI-capable Zephyr 360 in the future? Doesn't the current 360 support 1080p with the release of the 2006 fall update?

Edit: Oh...I guess below explains it. MS is trying to pull a fast one over existing xbox 360 owners because...well...they seemingly have to if they truly want 1080p support. Can't help but feeling a little jipped over all this...if I were to buy a 1080p set that only supports 1080p over HDMI. This is MS cutting corners in their race to the market.

FIOS from Verizon and Uverse from AT&T are forms of IPTV (depending on your strictest definition), and people have had it for at least 1 or 2 years in the San Antonio/Dallas areas. MS seems to be saying the Xbox can be used to tune into an IPTV signal. Whoopie. lol. :)

If true, the 120 GB HDD will probably be sold seperately anyway, so I'm not too worried about that. The HDMI is the only thing I'd miss, I suppose.

Do you guys have tv's with 2 HDMI ports?

If not, how the hell are you plugging in your HDMI cable box in, as well as a console?

    This is a non-issue. The HD-DVD & 120GB drives are optional add-ons.

So is the HDMI in a way. You'll have a big price drop on the 2 existing models of 360's and the HDMI model will come in at what the Premium does now.

99% of the people on this earth do not have HDMI, or have never heard of it.
They'll go for the 2 other models.

    It's about options.

Was I pissed when a couple of years after the original PS2 was released that Sony intro'd a slimmer, better version? No. My games still played on it & I had yeard of good play on my original console - sunken costs - bought the new one.

Maybe if you have a super HD-tv and just now bought your 360 then yeah that kinda sucks, but you're in the tininest minority of people in that situation.

Personally I think this is awesome. When I end up buying a tv capable of taking advantage of the 360's full capabilities, THEN i'll worry about this HDMI ****. At that point my older 360 become my older tv's game/DVD player.

I may have to look into this some more, but if I'm not mistaken, I don't think the design of the Xbox 360 can let MS put out a cable to enable HDMI for the early adopters (they might have put it out already had they been able to). Again, I’m not 100% sure on this, especially since there might be loopholes. I'm thinking the new SKU with HDMI is the only way to get that though.

Personally, I don't really see that big of a deal with what MS is doing. I guess it sucks that early adopters couldn't get HDMI, but it isn't like HDMI is that big of a deal IMO (though it is nice that MS would be adding it in). Plus, this type of thing isn't new to consoles. I'm pretty sure something similar will occur with both the Wii and PS3. I believe there is already a new Wii scheduled for release later this year with DVD playback (plus additional ports?). There's not much Sony can add to the PS3, although I suppose they could add another HDMI port and/or more networking options (as with the original design); they might also add RAM for better functionality when using Linux (though this would probably be a special order SKU that would be sold at a higher price and not the normal price tag).

    edit:
HDMI alone wouldn't warrant a higher pricetag. They'll probably just add it to the existing models...or at least I hope that's what they do.

Pretty much agree with you on all the other points.

Agreed. Well, that and the silly launch prices. I'm still loving my PS2. FFXII is awesome, and God of War 2 comes out ~March, not for the PS3, but for the PS2.

I remember the first time I saw an original PlayStation. I was most thoroughly NOT impressed. And I was comparing that to my Super Nintendo. My point is that with rare exception, developers don't figure out how to fully utilize a new systems capabilities for at least a year.

I'm happy waiting and picking up Greatest Hits for $20 in the meantime while the kinks get worked out, games get better, and prices (hopefully) drop.

And just to show that I'm on topic: Microsoft sucks arse.

the 360 hd-dvd player doesn't upscale old dvd's without hdmi am i correct? if there's a way around this then i don't care about hdmi as i don't really think the quality between that and component is an issue. i love the games on my 360 it's just frustrating to buy add-ons and potentially a new system to get the same features the ps3 has built-in.

You can use the 360 VGA cable to upscale DVDs IIRC.

i think the vga cable is the only way to output 1080p right now for the 360. i dont mind getting the vga cable but i heard on the hd-dvds it boxes in the image so it doesnt fill the entire screen. that would be really gay if i have my 61 inch and end up with only like 50'inch of view area and it would look funny to have the bars on the side and top and bottom

The VGA cable looks like **** on my TV. I ended up taking it back. I have the component cables, HD-DVD, and the 46" Samsung 1080p LCD. I think it looks fantastic. I use the 360 now as my primary DVD player.

I have a Denon receiver that has three HDMI inputs and upconverts the component inputs and feeds them all through the single HDMI output. It is super sweet!

The bigger HD for a 360 isn't a big deal since you can upgrade what you have anyway. There are tutorials online on how to do it.

I don't know much about the IPTV but it sounds sweet. I'd use it.

    Baiter,
My friend just boought the same 46 1080p Samsung. it does look bad on VGA.
I read that VGA performance is different for every TV with the 360.
The Xbox dvd player is fine at 480p. I got a samsung upscale dvd player, and i really dont notice to huge of an improvement for upscaling dvds.

Also Ive been renting HD DVDs instead of regular DVDs anyways.

why are you renting HD-DVDs when you don't have an HD-DVD player? Is it because it still looks better on regular players?

The Xbox 360 has been out a year or so. So they're upgrading the specs on it. What's the big deal? That happens all the time in the electronics industry. It's called progress. I don't see a reason to be mad about it.
