Getting more media reports that Philly is negotiating a buyout with him. Don't quite understand that, how it benefits them since he has another whole year left. But whatever. Can anybody see the Rox being interested in him for the minimum especially if we could move Sura and Padgett? At this stage, he's another slower big which we already have 3 slower players in Yao, Deke, and Juwan. However he is so talented with the passing and shooting, etc. even though it is near the end of his career. If a deal gets worked out, he will obviously be looking for a team with championship aspirations so I would think he would be looking at Miami, Detroit, possibly New Jersey in the East and perhaps the Rox, Lakers, Dallas, and the Spurs in the West. Can't see him being a fit in Phoenix. Narrowing that down a little further, I would think he realizes that the only teams with a legit shot to win in the West are Dallas, Spurs, Suns, and us. He has to know the Lakers can't get it done this year. And I question how much interest the Mavs would have in him with how they are playing and how their system works. San Antonio and the Rockets would be distinct possibilities. He would be a very talented offensive floor spreader for Duncan and could probably get significant minutes there. Here? Just don't know. Does anybody have a feel for what the interest level would be from the Rockets?
He doesn't fit here. Our PF needs to either be an outside shooter or an inside bruiser who focuses on defense and rebounding. CWebb does neither. What makes him a good passer is being the focal point of an offense, which he was not in Philly and wouldn't be here. He also thinks a lot more of his ability than is reality, which will cause him problems wherever he goes. The last thing we need is a proud, slow and selfish PF who needs touches (with or without getting shots). Very bad fit for us, IMO.
Hey, he's an upgrade over Padgett and Sura. There's no risk in giving him the minimum. We can use him with Yao out right now. He can take Novak's minutes. See how he does until Yao gets back, and then go from there.
He is exactly the type of guy the Rox need. If he is bought out, his buyout will include a clause to sign with a WC team ala Tim Thomas. He will want to sign with a contender that can provide him some meaningful playing time (us). For 20M he's not a bargain but for the minimum to get a double/double guy would be unreal. Exactly the type of guy playoffs team sign for depth to make a playoff run. Spurs signing Glen Robinson, Mavs signing Adrian Griffin, Pheonix signing Tim Thomas. I would kill for a chance at CWebb for the minimum.
I would love to get him for the minimum as well. If they dont have to give up much, whats the harm. He could even give us a few minutes at C. He could help us out especially because of Yao's injury. It will allow Yao to take his time.
For the minimum, he would give us a lot more than Padge. Yes, his shooting percentage is down right now. He has nothing to play for and you know he is trying to get out of Philly. But he can shoot from distance. He has proven that many times in his career and he does have range out to 3 point land, which is a lot more than Howard has and he is still rebounding at a higher rebound per minute rate than Juwan. And he is still dishing over 3 assists per game on a horrible Philly team. Put it this way, when Yao is out of the game for foul trouble or injury trouble and we need a score in crunch time, what combination would you rather see for an offensive possession? Deke and Juwan? Deke and Chuck? (Obviously not.) Juwan and Chuck? Juwan and Padge? Juwan and Novak? Juwan and Webber? Webber is a highly talented, highly skilled player. They're still running him out there 30 mpg in Philly. Yeah, he's lost some quickness, lost some lift, he's at the end, etc. But we're not talking a multiyear commitment. We're talking about a stretch drive for a championship. I think he could be very beneficial to a playoff team.
Bad fit iMHO. He is a selfish player with a big ego that does have to be the center of attention. A3PO is correct. He would hurt our chemistry.
If Sura retired, we could use the medical exception to offer him a pro rated $1.9 million deal. I think he could adapt to being a complementary player to get his shot at the title with the Rox.
If his ego is in check and he could handle long stretches on the bench without complaining, bring him on for the minimum. Your points are well taken when considering basketball ability only. But I've lost respect for CWebb and doubt he would lose his ego enough to be a plus. I just can't see him coming here as the #9 or #10 player and being satisfied with that. He isn't ready for that kind of role.
If he were to have a turnaround like Mutombo (or Howard) and embrace being an off-the bench, no/few touches role player, fine. But he is firmly in denial about who he is, like Ewing post-1997. Just last year he was still chiping loudly about never being a role player. Unless the angel Gabriel meets with him and he turns a new leaf, I'd pass. Evan
A rotation ready big for the minimum, I'll take it. If he has an attitude problem, he will be on the inactive risk. If he wants a ring, he could be that extra clutch player we need for the playoffs. Seems like a low risk, high reward signing to me. I would do it.
webber's a guy who can operate offensively outside of the paint. whether its grabbing random rebounds yao may miss, or make a few sweet passes to open guys. he'd definetly keep the D honest, and maybe with him and juwan sharing the 4/5 spot whenever yao is out (and god forbid whenever deke retire) they can cause some significant spacing for the team. he's not a dumb guy so mistakes will be limited and bad fouls hardly committed. if we could get him for the min that would be so friggin sweet. anything from the vet min to 3.5 mil would be awesome. its been said time and time again how he's looking for a superstar role. I really think thats BS. he's lookin for a defined role that will help elevate his team. when AI was with him in philly, they looked for him to what...grab boards, score, pass? and when he was limited to touchs, he was like "wtf, yall told me to score and do etc etc." point is...if he came ot houston, his role would be SO defined that whatever the few things JVG would want him to do, he'd do it and do it well. i think he's at that age where he just wants to win and not pad stats. guy knows he can light up the scoreboards, just need some definition in his role on a winning team. get him if we can but not give up the farm for him. and lets hope he doesnt call any timeouts during crunch time. ;-)
If we could actually get Webber for the minimum... why wouldn't we? He'd be pretty good coming off the bench and as injury insurance.
Contemplating about signing a player that burned us on his last free agency go around? Sure why not?? Maybe I'm taking it to the extreme but this was the same guy that used us as leverage IIRC to get this monster contract he has right now. He would be a good role player but that's about it. If they buy out his contract, expect San Antonio or Phoenix (hey, they can NEVER have too many of the same players) come a knockin.
What he said. I think he could help us.. but only situationally. I'd still want Hayes a lot and Howard some. Webber depending on the matchup and depending on how he's looking. And he won't get the ball all the time. I don't think he'd handle any of those things well...so I'm inclined to say pass.
