If I remember correctly he had that accident in 2004. The article I read about him was well before that. I can't find the particular article that I read but here is one from 2000 where he mentions about his health problems with arthritis and rheumathism.

On a tangent. Bol has done a lot to try to help out Sudan and its too bad he never became more prominent a spokesman for the problems of southern Sudan.

First, it's Charley Rosen who wrote this article, in which he did NOT use any direct quote from the MD. Also, do you have any first hand information that the MD intended to post via Rosen some imaginary medical conditions of Yao Ming, whom he never performed any diagnosis of? Further, just because an article mentions the name of an MD doesn't make it automatically acceptable, either.

Nope, it made no sense. There has been no single report by medical professionals, both in PRC and in the U.S., that Yao has excess growth hormone secreted by pituitary gland. The doctor's entire speculation (assuming Charley Rosen didn't pull something from his own ass) is based on the false premise that Yao is the subject of "giantism" directly associated with pituitary gland disorder. The whole claim should therefore be dismissed outright.

Define optimal body function and then specifically point to us which body function of Yao is not working optimally, and how an average Joe is doing better.

Even then, Yao would still be 31. At the end of this season, Yao will be 26. So at the end of the season five years from now, Yao will be 31. That is still a two year difference, which is very significant.

He is 26 now. His birthday is in September. So 5 year from now, he will be 31 going on to 32.

The late Andre the Giant was only 6' 10", yet considered a giant.

Yes, Yao is officially a "giant", and furthermore, he is deaf. It is too bad a deaf giant can do what we can't.

I don't know why everyone seems to be ignoring your post, man. I'll post the text again, this time all in bold:

    1. When Charley Rosen's article was translated and speedily got published and circulated on major Chinese websites, Team Yao's Erik Zhang Mingji read it; he said: "I just felt both annoyed and the whole subject matter extremely laughable. Frankly, there is no need to get mad or deal with such ignorant people; but I've to admit this is an extremely serious and malicious slandering to Yao Ming's reputation. Anyone that is close to Yao Ming or know Yao Ming will not have come to such conclusion. Yao Ming had gone through lots of such slandering, suspicion and doubts and other bitter experiences in his career so far, and every time, Yao Ming just proved his critics wrong by his actions/performance on court. The fact that this Charley Rosen wrote such articles just illustrated that as a professional basketball reporter, he (had done no research), had not interviewed Yao Ming in person, and had not interviewed any of Yao Ming's close associates."
    2. To rebuke Charley Rosen's claim, Yang Yi interviewed and seeked opinions from Doctor Yin Shinan, Branch Director, Internal Secretion Department, People's Liberation Army 304th Hospital.
    3. According to Doctor Yin, to diagnose whether someone has gigantism, he/she must meet at least one or multiple of the following characteristics:
    • Exterior appearance: extremely tall, with unbalanced length in the 4 limbs, and particularly, very long wing span, usually even longer than one's height.
    • Very slow speed and lateral movement
    • Usually parents of Gigantism patients are short, and the child unusually tall.
    • Very high level of growth hormone; unusual metabolism and unusual blood sugar level.
    • Most importantly, usually there will be a tumor in the pituitary glands with very high level of growth hormone.
    • If patients of Gigantism do not undergo surgery, he/she will soon over-grow and his/her height will retract.

    4. According to all the above criteria, it can be concluded Yao Ming could not be having Gigantism.

    • Even though Yao Ming is 2.26M, his wing span is only 2.20M, and is one of his weaknesses; according to Dr. Yin, the possibility for Gigantism is close to zero if someone's wing span does not exceed his height.
    • Yao Ming is very nimble, and is relatively one of the quickest big men in NBA.
    • Yao Ming's Dad, Yao Zhiyuan is 2.08M; Yao Ming's Mom, Fang Fengdi is 1.88M. Yao Ming's height is within the normal range in heredity study.
    • Yao Ming has to go through medical check every year in NBA. And in the past, there had not been any abnormalties reported.
    • Yao Ming had never gone under any surgery in the past (until last year), and he is now one of the most dominating centres in NBA.

    5. When Yao Ming was told about Charley Rosen's allegation, he just said: "Let them say or write whatever they want. It is just fabrication, just let them continue to fabricate; everyone has his/her own view. I've never seen this guy, Charley Rosen, and I don't give them a damn. Ever since I joined NBA, how many of such stuff I have read or heard already ? In my rookie season, someone said I'll collapse in Spring. So the result ? Did I collapse ? (Tell me) can a Gigantism patient become one of the top-ranking centres in NBA ?"

Well, people used to challenge, tease, rebuke, accuse Chinese media/reporters fabricated stories to attract eye-ball attention.

But then at least Yang Yi did interviewed a famous specialist of internal secretion, and listed out symptoms/characteristics of Gigantism patients, and rebuked this malicious slandering of Yao Ming being a Gigantism pateint, by pointing out that Yao Ming did not even match any of the symptoms/characteristics listed.

From that perspective, Charley Rosen is much much worst, quoting some unknown physician who never had seen or inspected Yao Ming (probably there is not even such doctor called Tom Winters), maliciously slandered Yao Ming to be a Gigantism patient. This all but well illustrated the fact that he is the #1 YOH (Yao Ming Hater) in NBA/Sports.

Did Rosen ever issue any kind of retraction or apology for this article?
