I'm not saying there's some secret trick that'll make trucks/suvs have better gas mileage. They'll probably never have as good as efficiency as cars. All I was saying is if you get a car for the better mileage, then run all over town every day of the week, constantly speed, always gun the engine, don't keep your tires inflated properly, mainly don't keep your vehicle maintained, then you're basically wasting gas just like anyone else. I've always driven a truck and I'm fine with the less than stellar gas mileage. I started in an old chevy that got only 10/mile, then got about 21 in an old nissan 4cyl and now get about the same in my tacoma v6. I know I don't get as good as gas as the cars so I try to make every last drop count and I try to be conservative in where I drive. Basically I try not to waste gas.

    Very true.

Really your preference in vehicles comes down to your personal tastes. Because each type of vehicle provides many types of benefits that other vehicle classes can't provide.

The portion of people supplied by this board does not reflect truck owners on a whole. SUV's are different then trucks. I live in college station, and you bet your ass that there are a large amount of jackass drivers driving bigass trucks and NEVER use them for mudding/hauling/anything-off-road/moving. They wear abercrombie hats and are usually really short. Because of the incredible amount of subjects such as this, I have grown to hate trucks. Now I have nothing against those who use trucks for a good purpose, but I'm tired of the portion of truck owners that I've seen.

I wish they'd make parking spaces bigger.

I drove to Cut-n-shoot Texas to pick up some equipment for my father once, and every vehicle was a truck.

So am I correct to assume that you have an equal disdain for those individuals that pour 20-30k dollars worth of racing modifciations into their $10K civics just for show as well?

Posers are one thing...but I see no problem with people wanting and liking to drive jacked up trucks just as I see no problem with people wanting to make minor modifications to their cars.

I also like to point how I love how its just assumed that you're a jackass because you like to drive a big ass truck. Snap judgements rule!

How many wrecks do you get into?? I find SUV's pointless. If you need to haul, get a truck. If you want off road, get a jeep. Otherwise, stick to a car.

I love my GMC Sierra pickup truck, have had it for over 13 years. Since I'm in the military, I've moved 8 times in those 13 years, have used it for hauling all kinds of stuff (landscaping, moving stuff to/from storage, etc) and have even used to help a friend move his airplane (no kidding!). My co-workers have borrowed it on numerous occasions to haul stuff around as well. I also have a Ford Escape SUV for the wife to haul the kids around. Neither of us have been a wreck (yet) and we actually get over 22 mpg in both vehicles. So with that said, I don't see what the problem you have with people owning these type of vehicles especially as in my case, it obviously serves a purpose.

hey i never said that i dont like them when they ahvea purpose. i just dont like people who just buy them to compensate for their deficiencies and for just going 'mudding' which i think is a big waste fo time lol. SO BUY TRUCKS/SUVs ONLY WHEN YOU NEED THEM!

Look I gave you my opinion based on your original post. You asked if driving a huge truck made people feel 'big' or make up for a deficiency. I merely answered your idiotic thread to show you that is not the case. You state that in your opinion trucks are useless. I merely gave examples where in my case (and in many others I suspect) my truck has proven to be quite useful. I really don't know anybody that bought a brand new truck or SUV just to go 'mudding' as you put it. PEOPLE BUY SUVS/TRUCKS BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THEY NEED THEM! Take advice from your own original post--don't get angry and allow people to post their opinions like you asked.

I really don't get why people get so wound up about other people buying trucks. There's lots of reasons. It's a cultural thing -- Texan men like to drive big trucks. It's an image thing - driving a big truck makes you look wealthy and powerful. Chicks dig men who drive trucks. I don't see what's so bad about that. Yeah, it may have its gas mileage and safety downsides, but people are different. Personally, I'm a sport sedan guy -- I like my cars full size, low to the ground and powerful. But just because you're an environmentally-minded guy who would rather drive around a VW bug doesn't mean you should berate others who like to cruise in a big imposing ride. People like to bash Christians for trying to "impose their rules" on others, but this is pretty much the same thing.

Don't get me wrong -- it's a valid argument, and I don't fault you for "wondering" why people like to drive trucks. But don't look down on them or think they're being stupid. Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. This is Texas.

I wrecked my father's '79 Mercedes 450SL, Senior year of high school.
I wrecked my '95 Volvo right after college, and I was the only person on a two-lane, residental road with a divider, which had an apparently hard-to-miss tree on it.
I scratched a co-worker's car on the company parking lot while driving another co-worker's car because my car was in the shop due to a dead battery. Our company had just launched a workplace safety initiative, so there was a nice meeting with my manager, some neat security camera footage, a signed statement, a cute little comment on my performance review and a slight adjustment to my year-end bonus.
And on my way out from Lowe's, I backed into some dude's Ford Taurus, or something. There was a small scratch on his fender, and he didn't think it was a big deal, but my registration was expired, so he got a $500 check for the inconvenience of promptly departing the scene (him, not me). (Considering my state's registration fee of 10% of vehicle purchase price, $500 is a pretty good bri-, err deal).

So, there, I've wrecked or scratched mine, my parent's and my co-workers car(s) four times in the last ten years. Don't you feel foolish for asking.

So, until I can get common sense for no money down and 5% APR, I'll settle for the SUV.

I don't mind mid-sized trucks and SUVs, but if you are getting a ginormous truck/SUV, and you don't actually use the space, it really is a waste. Plus, those damn huge trucks/SUV block other car's view. Every once in a while, I'll try to make a left with a huge car making a left on the opposite side, blocking my view. It's annoying, and shows an apathetic mindset towards others.
