I think you're making a logical leap from the factual statement of, "some founding fathers were devout Christians" to, "out country was founded on Christian principles." That's like saying that Turkey's constitution was founded on "Islamic principles" just because Muslims were involved in the process, when in fact it's a decidedly secular nation.

There is undeniably some Christian influence, but the core principle upon which this nation was founded is secularism (i.e. separation of Church and State), and it's explicitly implied in our constitution.

I disagree with your conclusion, and I think there is far more evidence to the contrary than there is to support your position.

I wish these Islamaphobes would just tell the truth and say they hate muslim people. We all know that's the reason, there is no possible way for there to be a hang up over the Qur'an being used by a muslim because when congressmen swear on a holy book it's just a publicity photo. The official swearing in is a group affair and no religious book is used at all.

What Christian principles was the United States built on? The country is built on secular principles. I believe Diesim was prevelant among the fouding fathers.

Some of the founding fathers whose belifs were shady - Thomas Paine, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin.

As Keith Ellison represents my district I can address this. The 5th District of Minnesota is primarily Minneapolis and is about as liberal as you can get. Two Greens are on the Minneapolis City council and the last time a Republican for any seat won was more than 20 years ago. The Republicans pretty much concede this district and the candidate they run Alan Fine was acknowledged by even most Republicans as being awful. Ellison is a very good speaker and had a tough fight for the DFL (Dem) nomination for a DFL'er though he also had a bit of a tougher time dealing not only with the Repub. Fine but also MN Independence Party Tammy Lee who essentially ran as a Dem. and was quietly supported by retiring representative Martin Sabo. Still this being such a strongly Democratic District Ellison and pretty much any Democrat is guarenteed this district.

Religion wasn't quite viewed the way then as it was now. Christianity was synonomous with civilization and printing the Bible for Native Americans I'm guessing was as much an effort to win them over to Western European culture as to convert them. It also was probably seen on some level as psychological warfare to undermine their own cultures.

To add to the point, keep in mind that Congress and the 'Founding Fathers' are not one and the same, and that there were a number of people all along the way who were in favor of religion in government. One of the first acts of the first Congress was to apoint a chaplin, even after the seperation of church and state was made part of the Bill of Rights.

There is a very nice web page on some of the forces pulling in different directions on this issue at the link below:

All politicians are corrupt. Jimmy Carter was an exception.

Well here's a fun little twist to the story...

Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, found himself under attack last month when he announced he'd take his oath of office on the Koran -- especially from Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode, who called it a threat to American values.

Yet the holy book at tomorrow's ceremony has an unassailably all-American provenance. We've learned that the new congressman -- in a savvy bit of political symbolism -- will hold the personal copy once owned by Thomas Jefferson.

Dude, I take like a year off, and MadMax is, like, more eloquent than ever. More sensible and righteous than ever. It's like he's taking moral steroids.

Can we get you to run for office? You've got my vote, and my limited campaign donations.

That's why you shouldn't leave. We were counting on your help to stunt MadMax's righteousness, and morality. And now look. You've let us down, and it didn't work.
