NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball has cancelled all 15 of Tuesday's scheduled games because of the attacks on New York City's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington.

All games were being cancelled although Major League Baseball officials had not yet reached officials in Milwaukee where the Brewers were to host the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night, MLB spokeswoman Kathleen Fineout told Reuters.

Yankee Stadium, perhaps the building that most symbolizes American sports, was evacuated.

The first attack occurred about 10 hours before the scheduled start of the Yankees' game against the Chicago White Sox, which was immediately postponed. Within an hour, all team employees had been sent home.

Government officials increased security outside the 78-year-old ballpark, located in the South Bronx, more than 10 miles from the Trade Center in lower Manhattan.

"The ballpark is ringed with police," Yankees spokesman Rick Cerrone said after leaving his office.

The Yankees did not plan to make any quick decisions about rescheduling the game.

The Yankees, who were rained out Monday night of their series finale against Boston, were starting a three-game series against the White Sox. There was no immediate word on Wednesday's and Thursday's games
