Thats great, man I was at the game section 20 row 1 seat 3- 1st row end zone seats, YEAH Anyways the game was great, the defense was outstanding and Vashers punt return was sweet, made up for his earlier miscue Mack is holding back offensively and i know it, that makes this quite impressive As for rbs, benson should start Anyways overall great win, the SAFETY was great and it was really 44-7(vasher shouldnt have touched the knuckleballish punt)
The players played a part in it as well Dvaurthin, we were pretty close to each other. I was in sect. 19 row 4 seat 1. Offense seems to have some timing problems. ALOT of drops killed drives and hurt the rhythm. They have two weeks to get ready for Houston. Not to look ahead, but Tech will be tougher this year also.
Mack Brown had nothing to do with that other than being a classy coach influencing his players to be classy, he said after the game that he would like to take credit for it, but that was purely his players idea. And Derrick Johnson is a beast.

DV, I think Benson should split time with Ivan and Ike should be the 3rd down back. BTW, Vasher just became a star today. He has Warrick type feet. Derrick Johnson is unbelievable. All over the place. He's a freshman.
I sure hope you're right V-trains. We play OU on the 6th of October. Greg Davis has only used a handful of plays so far this year. Our offense flat-out sucked today and I have no idea why. There were alot of things to cheer about today but the offense was not one of them. I along with everyone else in my section was disgusted by our pathetic offensive performance. We rarely threw downfield, or for more than 8 yards. I'm getting tired of watching Ike run off-tackle for 3 yds, and Simms throw 5 yd passes. This is not the much-heralded offense that I expected out of the Horns. Roy should be going deep, and BJ and Sloan should be going over the middle. Shanahan is a good possesion receiver, and Montrell can take it to the house on any given play. Yet, we still throw for only like 180 yards. POSITIVES: Special teams just DOMINATED! NC really got "Vasherized." I didn't expect this kind of play out of Nathan. Ike is solid at KR as usual. Also, all of our questions about the kicking game seem to be answered as Mangum hit two FG's from 50+. Defense absolutely schooled NC as expected. Cory Redding- enough said. Derrick Johnson is the second coming of Ray Lewis- he's an animal and only a true freshman. DD Lewis played great as did Jammer. Hell, if the Horns keep playing the way they are on D and Special Teams, they will be Pasadena bound. Just like OU last year who won on defense and special teams play. well im not positive baqui, but i dont think we have even remotely been showing our true offense, i mean i was frustrated too but i really think well go 5 wide vs ou/aggies/nebraska(title game)
I think our wr's are starting to believe their own hype. I'm not sure they're as hungry as they should be. We'll right the ship though. FWIW, the UNC players believe we're better than OU. Also, the UNC coach said at a pep rally before the game that Texas was the fastest college team he has seen.
Baqui99: Texas isn't going to open up the offense until they play OU. There's not any reason for them to do so. They know they're 8 or 9 cuts above everybody else until then, so why give the OU scouting department any tape footage? Until then, dink passes and running it up the middle works fine. I'm sure they'll air it out now and then... but I bet most plays are saved for Oct 6th. My biggest worry is that if they are doing this, that they'll be rusty on big-game plays. Hope they're practicing hard. Benson might as well start. Ivan Williams and Victor Ike looked extremely mediocre. Might as well give the eventual star some PT now since it's not going to hurt anything. I understand starting a good, experienced back over a frosh with tons of potential. But why bother when the experienced backs aren't that great?
haven -- do teams actually do that (save stuff in the gameplan for the big game)? I'm rather new to College Football, and I know the NFL doesn't do it. It makes no sense...why would you wait to exercise all your best options until you play the #3 team in the country? I would think you would want to try it a few times in a real game situation to make sure it works. I'd think you'd want to have more reps before going against a dominant defense. Simms is all hype to me right now. I have to figure if Applewhite had been QBing the first 2 games, the offense would have compiled some impressive numbers. He's just a better QB, period.

shanna, haven -- forgot to mention that the commentators were saying that Benson had no idea how to block yet, which makes sense I guess. Is he really that athletically superior to the other guys to where an entire facet of his game should be thrown aside, when these are big games? I would think not.
Athletically, I'm not so sure. Ike runs a 10.3 hundred and Ivan has run a 4.4-4.5 forty. Cedric was the #1 running back in the country according to some. He just has this ability to make something out of nothing. He's not the fastest or the strongest, but he seems to be the most natural running back. He reminds me of an Emmitt Smith type back, only with a bit more speed. He has great balance and vision.
Freak and Shanna: I don't think they're keeping it a secret that they're saving some things for OU. After the first game, Greg Davis came out and said that there best set would have been with 4-5 wideouts but they elected not to do so because they wanted to establish the running game. I doubt they'll hide their offense if they have a close call, but against OU, I expect to see almost exclusively 4 WR sets. That's their strength, by far. Benson doesn't block well yet, but he's got great instincts and is a Ricky Williams-style back. Not the fastest, and not the largest, but a combination of the two that's very rare. Fast enough to outrun the lineman and strong enough to knock the secondary over, if you take my meaning.

He's just a better QB, period.</B> You know, at the beginning of last year, I was 100% Applewhite. After seeing Simms towards the end of last year, I figured Simms earned the start. After watching these first two games, Simms looks bad. His receivers didn't help him, but its the before-the-throw process that bugs me. If you watch him, he looks at one receiver the entire time. He has one target and throws to him, ignoring the rest of the field. Worse yet, he doesn't see defenders either. I would think not.</B> Good question. Benson is another Simms in that respect -- the "next Ricky Williams" in this case. However, Benson has shown some impressive flashes that the other two backs simply have never shown in their 2-3 years here. On the running part of the game, I think he'll be the clear-cut best by the end of the year, although maybe not just yet. On other aspects, I have no idea. What really scares me is the idea that we're going to use 5-wide for OU. OU will blitz the hell out of us if we go 5-wide, and there won't be anyone in the backfield to protect Simms. I'm guessing our 5-wide doesn't work against an OU-like defense. 4-wide (with one back to help block) was incredible for this team last year -- I don't understand why he haven't seen more of that yet.

When we were up 20-14 at halftime, though, our first drive of the 2nd-half was the same old junk -- run Ike up the middle for 1 yd, repeat, throw a bad 5yd pass that wouldn't have gotten a first down anyway, and punt. Seems like that would have been a good time to run something decent. My personal opinion is that Greg Davis is a moron. Establishing the running game is nice, but if that's not going to be the focus against the good teams anyway, why bother? Why not get some practice running the offense you'll be using against OU, instead of only having run it against our 2nd team defense?
