I'm not saying the Indians didn't get hosed but I don't think it compares to the Holocaust.

at least 10 million natives were killed. how many do you require for it to be a holocaust?

    wiki

oh and i didn't mention how many africans died on their voyage here. thats a holocaust too.

I'm just saying the situations are quite different. It's not like the Indians were 100% peaceful before the Euros came over.

I just don't understand comparing events that happened hundreds of years apart in different types of societies. It'd be like saying the number of abortions constitutes a "holocaust."

The Jews were systematically targeted for termination, taken to camps and executed. It's much different than engaging in a fight for land. Fighting for land has happened throughout history. Are all of those situations "holocausts" in your mind?

As I said, the Indians got hosed. However, we're brought up to believe that the Indians were 100% peaceful and it's only the meanie white man who made them violent. I don't buy into that.

    The situations are completely different.

But I'm not trying to start a fight about it. I shouldn't have said anything and I'll just drop it. As I said, both of the groups have legitimate complaints about their pasts.

You have to tip your hat to German efficiency.

In the U.S. if you weren't male, Protestant and white, then at some point you got hosed.

im not comparing necessarily. i just think these groups that got 'hosed' and we dont hear about it as much as we perhaps should. thats all. we have a history which we shouldn't deny. doesn't mean we bear the guilt of our forefathers but we should definitely respect and honor those who were brutally massacred.

however i think its problematic when people start blaming both sides equally. one side got killed in the millions. the other side..well rules the world. of course success doesn't mean the actions were anymore immoral but i think we certainly dont do enough to honor native americans nor the africans.

hell we just built the smithsonian for native americans this year (if memory serves)

If that's correct, it shows how delusional the extremists are - I'm pretty sure that Hitler didn't hold much love for Muslims.

It's funny that you claim 10 million natives were killed, yet the Wikipedia article you linked to says the number was 7,193.

Anybody who takes this clown Ahmadinejad seriousely is just plain delusional. recently he was booed off by the students in a university in tehran. minutes later he accused the students of being on the " CIA" payroll. infact most if not all of the students are now missing. yes, missing. they were roundedup and god knows what happen to them. those sentiments against the theocracy in iran are all too common. i've seen it first hand.

never Forget Slavery and Jim Crow
The list of TRAGEDIES that need to be remember is VERY LONG
I never understood what made the holocaust 'special'
Why was the pain in suffer in that instance considered 'worse'
    than say . . . Rwanda

What happen to the Native Americans, Jews in the Holocaust and African's during the slave trade were all horrible. I'm not sure there is any benefit of comparing. But, if I'd have to pick though I'd say the treatment of the African's during the slave trade was the worst.

Maybe it was the live gas chambers. or humans being's used as guinne pigs by the evil nazi doctors. or babies being burnt alive.
maybe it was the germans burning people and making soaps out of there body fats.

It was the way they were slaughterd. evily methodical and there aim was to extract the maximum amount of pain that they could.

i get your point, but out of 6 million or so (official figures) i dont think 4-5 million were non-jewish. probably less than 1 million.

stalin killed more people than hitler, but what he did generally isnt refered to as a holocaust.

sishir, i heard the same story on npr - it is really sad that present day muslims want to deny good deeds done by their ancestors b/c the people they helped were jews.

i have heard that in some european countries (germany, in particular) it is against the law to even claim that less than 6 million jews were killed. you can get in trouble for saying it was only 5 million.

i went to germany for the first time last year and one of the things that struck me was the reminders of the holocaust, especially in berlin. as much as germany gets ragged on for hitler and the holocaust, they make sure that they never let themselves forget - there are constant reminders everywhere - unlike japan, they acknowledge the atrocities committed and seem to want to do everything possible to avoid something like that happening again.
