Those guys are not running QBs like Young. Most Elway ever ran for was 304 yards. Favre- 241 yards. Montana- 227 yards. Steve Young was better, had a high of 537 and several years of 400+. But Young already has 458 yards and didn't even start at the beginning of the season. Totally faulty comparison, DaDa. But the amazing thing about Young is how he can run for long gains, 1st downs, and TDs without getting hit. He runs smart and knows when to go out of bounds. If he keeps running smart he won't have to worry about injuries.
Vince. I was wrong. All those idiots wearing Vince titan jersies yesterday could have been wearing Vince Texans jerseys. The whole city wouldn't be divided like it is now. We could have been united behind the Texans. By the way, Vince looks like he's going to be a better option at QB than Carr... But that's not what happened, so let's all move on.
Trade down. It's what I wanted then, it's what I would want if it were re-done tomm. The defense automatically takes a mild hit w/o Mario's size. A hapless Carr wouldn't have been much better with Bush, though he'd be great as a dump route reciever. Vince would have led to Carr's benching by mid season but I'm not convinced that he could get the ball in Andre/Eric's hands on a regular basis. Leinart would have also led to a switch but I'm not convinced that it'd be a major upgrade (upgrade yes, but how much?). Trade down and get Brick. Maybe no one offers their draft board. Maybe we have to toss in one of our third rounders to get it done. But the guys at the top weren't guys we seriously needed (O-Line, anywhere on D). Carr should never have gotten extended and we should have gone after Brees. Unfortunately, that's what happened. Now we need to cut/trade Carr, draft Kolb, draft more help for D or the O-Line, and sign a workhorse RB if we don't see one in the draft (no, I don't like Adrian given how often he gets hurt). Evan
Ok, then think of it this way...those guys were all version 1.0 of a QB who can run.....Michael Vick and VY are versions 2.0.....next gen.... DD
How about VY as McNair 2.0. Better runner and is catching on to the NFL game faster. Vick to me is a guy who hasn't really ever focused on his passing game and gets injured too much.
If i had to do the draft all over again,I would have select Demeco ryans with the first pick.In all,he will be one of the few rookies in the pro bowl.=)
This poll is pointless. Obviously they should have taken Vince Young (in fact, I think at this point anyone who says otherwise is just in denial -- and I am still a solid supporter of Mario). But it's all nothing but revisionist history and is utterly unproductive. They thought Carr was the answer, and right now it looks like Carr is not the answer. The sooner they pick up the pieces and move forward with rebuilding the franchise, the better. I'd be far more interested in questions about whether or not we should pursue drafting a rookie quarterback and then move on to solving other pressing issues, like our ever-overmatched offensive line and shallow secondary.
VY has more arm strength than Montana. I think his and Steve Young's arm are probably comparable. Farve and Elway have another level of arm strength I give you that. Scambling was not just an "added dimension" to Elway. Like McNabb, McNair, and Steve Young, it allowed these guys to make great individual plays despite good opposing defenses. Elway's feet and athleticism were fundamentally part of making him a devastating football player, the cannon instead of just an ordinary live arm just enhanced it. That is in part because Tenn doesn't have very good receivers. Look out next year with a healthier group (get Givens, Troupe back), and if they can add a verticle threat speed WR. But right now VY is by far their most explosive open field guy regardless of position, so he will run more. And the process of thrower-runners like Vince Young over time scrambling to run a little less and scrmabling to throw a little more over time in the NFL is a common process. Elway, S. Young, McNabb, and McNair all went through it. Elway also talks about him learning to pass more and run less over the 1st part of his career, that he was too soon taking off and running. Elway was not as strait line fast as either Young however, thus gaining fewer yards and getting closed on more often with punishing blows when he would run down field. VY has always been more in the mold of S. Young/McNabb/McNair than Vick for those who really watched him. Elway is a really different player than anyone who ever played, but IMO VY has that quality of seeming to do whatever he wants against the opposing 11 guys (opponents who by football standards may be fine players doing fine jobs and still looking hapless), particularly in clutch situations, that one associates foremost with John Elway in the modern football era.
And meanwhile Joe Montana, weak arm and all, is the greatest QB to ever play the game... the perfect mix of accuracy, leadership, and plain 'ol intangibles that led to a whole lot of winning. I'm also glad that Elway won the superbowls... otherwise, he wouldn't have gotten the full credit he deserved.
Plain and simple... A player like Mario Williams can be had during future offseasons..ie Dwight Freeney this year Someone like Vince comes once in a generation; oh and guess what he plays quarterback, the same position that literraly is the heart and soul of the team. Besides Reggie White not too many DE's can take a team on their back (remember he had that Favre guy); but as we all saw yestersay and twice, yes twice in the Rose Bowl, VY can not only carry a team on his back, he can motivate all of his teammates to become great...ie...Pacman Jones. The Houston Texans organization pulled a Sam Bowie!!!!!
This once in a generation talk comes every year....so its not a generation. Reggie AND Vince can't be once in a generation talent. Oh wait....I thought Vick was? In my draft do over....I trade down to pick up Brick AND Mangold. In the third, I would still get Spencer and maybe use that other 3rd round pick for something else. It's about time we attempt to fix the line. Tom Brady couldn't score a single point against the Dolphins b/c he was too busy hollering at his offensive line. He got sacked 4 times.
I'm with you ... I wanted to trade down. Like many have said, this team is more than 1 player away from competing and trading down and getting multiple players would have been a good thing especially considering how high Bush's stock was. I'm a Chargers season ticket holder and I remember the year after they drafted Eli and traded him away (getting Rivers and eventually Merriman) everyone here (and nationally) were wondering if they could win even 2 games and they ended up winning 12 so I know the Texans are not that far away either. It just takes a culture of winning and getting a few key pieces in there that work together.
It also takes a GM innovative enough to actually a.) have a vision/gameplan, b.) stick with it, and c.) pray enough that it works out. The Texans had but just ONE of these the first 4 1/2 years of existence... and they've been praying ever since.
PICK BUSH, both young and bush are gonna be stars but Bush is better than Ron Dayne...wtf RON FREAKIN DAYNE!!!
I'm sticking with Mario Williams. I forgot who I wanted last April, but Mario is fine and will be a great part of the Texans' defense for the next decade. You can't win Superbowls without a good defense.
