A jury recommended today that Keith Turner be sentenced to 90 years in prison for his role in a savage attack in which a plastic pipe was kicked into the rectum of another teenager, causing severe injuries.

Turner, 17, showed no reaction as he stood and listened to the verdict.

His mother, Janis Turner, sobbed loudly upon hearing the decision.

The verdict means Turner must serve at least 30 years before he can become eligible for parole.

The jury convicted Turner of aggravated sexual assault on Friday for the April 22 attack at a residence in Spring.

Later on Friday, during the trial's sentencing phase, Turner's mother said from the witness stand that he is a loving son with a good heart, but had fallen in with a bad crowd.

"He's not a bad kid,'' Janis Turner said, sobbing. ``He's making bad choices.''

Turner's 18-year-old friend, David Tuck, was sentenced to life in prison last month after being convicted of aggravated sexual assault for the same attack.

Gus Sons, 16, whose home was the site of the attack, testified that Turner had held the 1½-inch-diameter pipe in place and Tuck had kicked it deep into the unconscious victim's rectum.

The victim testified in both trials that he does not recall the attack or the day leading up to it. He said he has undergone about 30 surgeries to repair massive internal injuries.and has more to go.

Sons told jurors that he, Turner, Tuck and the 17-year-old victim had been drinking and using drugs before the attack took place.

He said Tuck knocked the victim unconscious because the group suspected that the victim had stolen some of the drugs. Sons also said his younger sister, Danielle, then 12, had accused the victim of trying to kiss her.

Sons said Tuck shouted "white power!'' while beating and kicking the Hispanic victim.

I wonder who pays for the hospital bills for the treatment?

I hate the 'he's just making bad decisions,' and 'bad crowd' excuse. It's just so moronic I don't think it needs any explanations. As if the decisions were magically imposed and the bad crowd magically forced him to take part. Like supafrumpy said, this guy will get what he dished out on a daily basis in jail. I've had lots of personal experience with people (from older teens to older adults) like this and I have no sympathy for them.

What else is a mother to say about her own kid....

They tried to cover up the evidence with bleach and they left the victim for dead.

I think 30 years guaranteed is fair.

90 years is a tad excessive, IMHO...

Now before I get crucified, keep in mind this dude's, um, "structural integrity" is going to compromised enough in the first weekend alone for him to learn whatever lesson he needs to.

90 years is excessive. It's essentially life...but they did not commit murder. Nor is it clear that they intended to cause the severe damage that they did.

Certainly jail time. How much? I don't know. But 90 is too much. I mean, kicking a plastic pipe up someone's ass....sounds more like a stupid prank gone wrong....I doubt they knew the consequences.

While that doesn't excuse what they did....it certainly doesn't make it a life penalty.

You know how I usually handle something I don't understand the consequences for? I try to hide it with bleach. Totally understandable.

Ugh. You had to quote NY huh? Too bad ignore doesn't work on quoted replies. I couldn't resist to take a look:

    1. Drawing on your friend's face while he/she is asleep is a prank. Forcefully KICKING A PIPE up someone's rectum while UNCONCIOUS isn't.
    2. If you need to actually know the consequences to prevent you from committing such a violent act as this...I'm speechless.

90 years is a lot for a non murder.

However, this is only differentiated from a murder because the victim was lucky enough to survive. I don't think we should reward criminals for being lucky.

30 years guranteed is definately fair. This attack was one of the most absurd things I'd ever heard of. I also thought it was ridiculous that the 12 year old girl was also on coke and xanax. At 12 years old are you kidding? Where are these kids parents?

They probably thought the attack was justified due to the victim's race.

Does this qualify as a hate crime?
