This is a very good movie. I guess we focus on the mess in Iraq, but africa is just as bad if not worse. They have kids going around shooting people. This movie should make you think a few times before buying a diamond.
This story should make you think a few times before buying a ticket for this movie... http://www.wwtdd.com/post.phtml?pk=1499
I don't know about that story but the movie is fantastic. It's a tad too long but it's one of the better films this season for sure.
you're right. africa is worse than iraq. we should be in sudan right now. i dont know if you watched 60 mins last sunday, but that kind of stuff is giong on in sudan right now
I used to work with a guy who's family escaped from Sierra Leone. He was a young kid (around 8 or 9 I believe) when they left. They came here with nothing and lived in poor housing for a while --- but they all overcame that too.
I spent a year there over 20 years ago, before the violence. It was already the poorest country in West Africa before the atrocities broke out. My heart is broken.
Djimon Hounsou is the African actor and he gave another Oscar worthy performance in the movie "Amistad".
pretty damn good movie I thought. There was a lot of violence...and some of it of the "disturbing" kind. But still, really good. DiCaprio has done wonders since Titanic.
I guess I am one of the few people who didn't like the movie all that much. I didn't really find it 'compelling' and Jennifer Connolly was just beyond awful. Obviously, I am willing to overlook that because I believe the movie brings attention to a topic that's often forgotten, which is the exploitation of Africa. That being said, it was a very average movie, IMO.
After I saw the cheezy words uttered by Leo in the preview: "In Africa, it is Bling Bling, here it is bling bang", I did not want to see it. I might check it out since you all say it is decent. I was born in Africa and feel sad to see/hear all that goes on there with not many people giving a damm. Thanks to George CLooney and other bringing attention to the Darfur/Tchad region. I was born and lived in Tchad for 8 years so it is dear to me. We, in America have it so good compared to the rest of the world...we should be more thankful and not take things for granted.
I saw this movie on DVD tonight. I'll confirm what pretty much everyone in this thread has said. 1. This is truly a quality movie. Great story, amazing acting. Leo and Djimon Hounsou both deserve their Oscar nods, and had either won, it would have been well deserved. As for Djimon Hounsou, man, that guy is a fantastic actor. Maybe he was born for these roles, but still, he plays them to perfection. 2. If there could be one critisicm on the movie, I understand the dissapointment in Jennifer Connolly. I think she's a much better actress than she gave in this movie. Maybe her character just didn't have that much true personality written into it. Still, all that said, her perfomance was still better than many could have done and it didn't detract from the movie that much. 3. I can't say what happened with the production company, the movie, the American response since the movie, etc., but it does make you think about Africa. The situation there is mindboggling and, this movie makes you want to help. Anyway, I liked this movie. I wish I saw it in the theatre. It was one of the better movies of the last few years, imo, despite it's (and Connolly's) somewhat stereotypical formula...
Great movie. I don't understand how this comes as a surprise though. You guys are intelligent internet users. By now you should've figured out that media focuses on specific things. By now you should've figured out a way to find out what's going on in your country my country, Africa, the Middle East, and North Korea without being shocked. Get out there and try to find some truly globa new sources. Personally, I see BBC doing a half-decent job. Throw Al Jazeera and CNN out the window. I really think we all need to work on our information sources, and to reduce the risk of bias, develop a portfolio of news sources to make sure you're getting the best global news you can get. Please don't allow yourself to be spoonfed a lot of the crap out there. Information is one of the strongest weapons in fighting today's problems, so we need to work on that.
This movie is f'n great...A little violent, but it shows what it was like and of course, makes you think...Everyone was great, especially Leo..It was a long ass movie, but worth it...The end if fitting yet makes you wonder... Diamonds are so overplayed...When its time to propose, give her a chunk of coal because you saw this movie and don't want to contribute to the brutality that goes on...
I liked the movie, Dicaprio played great, his South african accent was very good. For the people that haven't seen Hotel Rwanda. That is trully an amazing movie. It is less action but more an emotional story.
