Frankly, you are all r****ded. No one has any right to tell anyone else how they should or shouldn't root for a sports team. It's all subjective, much like religion. Let people cheer however they want to. Freedom of expression, individuality, and all that jazz. Now, having said that, I declare MadMax to be the single worst sports fan in the entire galaxy, including any and all parallel universes, as well as the worst in the history (past, present, and future) of all sports, both real and fictitious. Go peddle your "opinions" and "analysis" elsewhere. Independent thought is for the weak. You're in Texans country now.
I see your point on this even though I dont necessarily agree with it. First of all, this just in, the Rocket fans not long ago and definitely before we won our first championships over a decade ago, could you say that H-Town REALLY supported the Rockets. There were years where the Summit hardly sold out for a handful of games. I think in fact 1996 was the first year we sold out a full schedule or even close to it. The Stros have done largely nothing in the postseason until recent but, STILL no World Series title! As for the Oilers??? I'm sorry but going down that pathway leads to a House of Horrors. The Oilers didnt need a message therapist, they needed an exorcist! Where else could a veritable glut of talent amount to positively zero in the playoffs on SO MANY occasions! The Oilers I remembered ... 1987 Won in OT over Seattle, only to get bu-foo'd by the Broncs aiding by the brilliant call by master tactician extraordinaire, Jerry "Dude Where's My Car?" Glanville. Remember "Stagger Lee?" I do and so does at least half of Houston's population who was here then. 1988 Lost 17-10 in Buffalo, on a situation where it mattered the most, a costly fumble after the D stiffened and forced a punt. But that was only the appetizer ... 1989 blow the last 3 games of the year where any one of those wins salts away a division. Blablabla ... So we host the wildcard vs the Steelers AND true to choking Oiler form they played down to their competition. Led by Bubby "freakin" Brister and Merril Hoge, Brister spearheads a game-tying TD drive in last 2 minutes of the game. To OT we go, joy and happiness. Oilers get the ball and did WHAT? An infamous play ... the give to Lorenzo White, where apparently the whole Steeler D was like a shark smelling blood and about at least 6 or 7 tackled him and SURPRISE ... a fumble. The Oilers D held but Gary Anderson STILL kicks a ball from 56 yds and splits the uprights. I mean he could have kicked from another 10 yds away. 26-23 Steelers in OT! 1990 ... dont remember much because I was in USMC bootcamp, I believe we finished 10-6 and won a WC but ho-hum once again NADA! 1991 ... John Elway again breaks our hearts in Houston as he leads the Broncs back from a 24-6 deficit, the key play is Heywood Jeffires dropping what would have been the game winning TD as the game turned out. With the score 24-23, Richard Johnson commits the biggest bonehead play possibly ever, he goes after a scrambling Elway and leaves Vance Johnson wide open for 40+ yard gain and everything just fell perfectly in place for another catatonic Oiler blunder. I was in Okinawa for this one. Oh Joy! 1992 ... The Butt-F**KALLO disaster from hades. Fortunately, I was in Somalia at this time or may have shot MY TV set! LOL. And now for the piece de resistance, the Oilers bring in Buddy Ryan and the 46 D. They brought in some REAL solid support players. We started the year 1-4 and finished with an 11 game winning streak for the 1993 season culminating with the complete demolition of the Jets 24-0 and Boomer Esiason getting sacked a dozen times. So, now we have a home playoff game with the Chiefs for the Divisional playoffs as we skipped the first round. January, 1994. The Oilers started off 10-0 and then an innocuous play happened in the 2nd Quarter, Montana was able to get a pass off and just missed his receiver for the Chiefs. The second costly play was the Oilers fumbling just before the half when they would've been certain to get at least a TD, no worse than a FG. They got NOTHING! That cast a pall going into halftime for the Oilers. Once the second half ensued, you could tell the adjustments made were going to screw us into a corner once again. Maestro, the death march please ... DADA DA DA, DA DADA DA, DA DADA! Now the score is 21-13 Chiefs, the Oilers go down cut the lead to one but, comeback Joe strikes again and now it's 28-20 and oh btw MadMax, this game saw the Chiefs sack Moon NINE TIMES! Derrick Thomas knew Moon better than his running backs in this game. After this game, it was truly the beginning of the end for the legacy from hell that was the Houston Oilers. Outside of 1961, what did the Oilers do? They won one or two AFL championships, rarely won their division and never won an AFC championship? So WHY should I have any positive feelings about the Oilers EVER? Those arent good memories for me, they're a F-N Nightmare! Man, Screw the Oilers and the horse they rode in on! Buck Fud in HIS ASS! The Texans dont compare to this because, they havent experienced any real success. Unlike some on here with their ignorant ramblings, I am a true fan, good or bad, happy or sad. I now bleed Steel Blue. I understand the happy-go-lucky "bandwaggoners" but basically cant stand em because they arent REAL FANS! You watch things change over the next few years and watch how many scurry back over and have the gall to say "I knew you all could do it all the time! Kuby's a genius! ... yada yada yada. I have more respect for a person that will STILL wear his teams colors even if their record is 4-9 or 2-11. Why? Because, that person is me as well. You know why because one day or turn WILL come the fruit when it's perfectly ripened for harvest will taste the sweetest. Kuby has had a no-win situation here for this entire year. He either gets regular or extra spicy! No matter what move he made he was going to bite into a SH*T sandwich! The team C&C Idiot Factory left him with should be considered a crime punishable by law but, it is what it is. We got F----D without the privilege of a reach around and certainly with no vasa-freakin-line! The Texans still either have no REAL talent especially cumulatively on the respective lines both OL and DL or their talent base is very slim and the backups should be stocking shelves at Kroger's. BUT ... it will get better, because frankly it really cant get much worse!
Does anyone else find it ironic that we are in a Rockets board that just so happened to have a section for "Texans, Astros, Comets." I guess you ARE in the right place rhino17. I have been a Longhorns fan longer than a Texans fan and being a student at UT I got to go to many home games and even the Rose Bowl championship year. So forgive me when I say I would like to see Vince do well. I am glad that it was Vince that beat the Texans and not anyone else on the Titans. Who are you to say who is a Houston fan and who isn't. I sure hope you were out there cheering for the Dynamos, them being the champs and all. Oh yah, don't forget the Comets as well. I pledge my loyalty to the Rockets, Astros, and Longhorns. Sorry Texans, a house doesn't make a home. Just because you are playing in Houston, doesn't mean you are Houston's team yet.
Don't bash on the fans. Having the name of this city attached to the team name does not obligate anyone to cheer for them. They have to earn it. We've seen the Rockets win it all and that is why we are hooked. We've seen the Astros fight every year and that deserves loyalty. I don't remember a time when I felt good about the Texans for the 5 years they've been here. Heck, I feel more attachment towards the Dynamos and I never watch soccer.
Just calling them the way I see them, Maestro! There is no love lost with me and the Oilers/Titans. This folks is to become a REAL rivalry. It's the Hatfields vs the McCoys. The Texas Rednecks vs the Hillbilly bass-ackwards Country F**KS! LOL. There is NO middle ground in this rivalry. You either cheer for the Titans or you cheer for the Texans. Dont give me that crap about VY and it's all about 10. They also have jerks, Pac-*** Jones and Not so Lordly Alfred Haynesworth. Y'all may love VY but you also have to love the most evil SOB to walk the planet IMO, Buttkiss Adams. Hell will freeze before I cheer for Buck Fuds team! I would rather eat indian curried food and take induced installments of ex-lax with my frothy Prune juice smoothie! That's how I feel. Remember Bud screwed us! He played us, he tooled us and he schooled us all in the same motion. He sucked all the joy out of pro football in Houston. Remember that guy? I respect and admire VY and silently wish him all the best because he is a class act but will NOT cheer for him as long as he is a member of the Titans and/or Buttkiss Adams is the owner. PERIOD.
This has got to be the absolute DUMBEST post on this subject. Hello, the Texan fans only really started booing after the Brown debacle, last game of the season in 2004. Since then, coupled with the monuments of ineptitude and pathetic play known as the Texans, the fans have elevated it to an artform. I think every time the Texans give away another possession it's just primordial frustration bubbling to the surface because, this offense is anything but prolific. Duh!!! They're freakin professionals! Which means they supposedly are good at what they do.
Skimming through this thread...I've seen numerous responses, so I'll paraphrase and reply. "You root for your team no matter what the case is" True. "The number of people growing angry with this team is growing" I agree, I'm one of them. The problem is not people getting angry...cause at this point, everyone should be. BUT, that's not an excuse to erupt into madness like your team just won the Super Bowl, when the jersey on your back is Red/White/Blue, after Vince scores a game winning TD. "Vince Young's penis is about 8 feet long to accomodate Rich Lord and all his followers" That sounds about right. "Just because a city name is attached to a team doesn't mean you automatically have to root for them" I agree with this as well, but if you're going to call yourself a Texans fan, only to root for the other team (player) when times get rough, you're just a flake. "I never said he was the second coming. I said he embodies what Houstonians are." Vince didn't look very fickle on that last TD run
dude...how old are you? akeem was the consensus number one overall pick. period. portland took bowie because the rockets took akeem. end of argument.
Oh, they aren't going to run the Texans out of town but what you'll start to see is increasing fan apathy and disinterest toward this team. After yesterday, I expect a goodly number of Houston football fans to not support this team until they start putting a competitive, winning product on the field and that will take take years. Statewide, you'll see the Texans become a distant afterthought when compared to the Cowboys. Now as a guy who grew up following godawful Oilers teams that stumbled and bumbled along in the shadow of the Cowboys, I cannot begin to explain how much that sucks - you have to live through it to fully understand. You also have to consider that they (Texans) have lost those VY fans for good and that twice a year until he retires, their decision to pass on him and Reggie Bush will be a running NFL joke.
My hatred for the Cowboys is gone. Probably cause there is only one NFL team in Texas after the Oilers left.
I'm not a Houstonian, but I am a Texan (though not a diehard) fan. Texan "fans" baffle me. Can you imagine a similar situation in Cleveland? Let's say that Ted Ginn, Jr. gets drafted by the Ravens, goes to Cleveland and scores the winning touchdown in overtime. Then he celebrates like winning the Super Bowl. Then he goes on to say how the Ravens are the real Cleveland team. Ginn would be completely Bartmanned. He wouldn't be allowed back into Cleveland. But Texan fans treat Vince Young like he's a hero.
All they had to do was to take VY and they would have had every Longhorn and Houstonian behind them. The rest of the team could suck even worse then they do now and they still would be popular. But they blew it, and now will become the Texas Rangers or Devil Rays of the NFL. Although there will be the diehards that will support them because their team says Houston, but I wonder how many of them actually buy season tickets. I bet you will be able to buy some psl's cheap this offseason. The fans that are heavily invested financially in this team are probably going to start weighing their options. Since no one in the organization likes drafting Longhorns, if I was McNair I would seriously start drafting Aggies. You could get that fan base supporting them whether they win or lose. Mcgee and Japorky and that stadium would be full of aggies even if the team goes winless
Exactly! The season tickets have kept selling even though the team has given the consumers (fans) have been given no real reason to shell out the bucks for what they are getting on the field. I am waiting to see if this season epitomized by what happened yesterday actually represents a turning point in the Houston football fan's relationship with the team.
Are you really trying to compare Ted Ginn Jr. to Vince Young? If so, you've completely missed the whole idea, so it's not surprising you're baffled.
