First off I would like to know how much the Rockets are under the cap by? I checked realgm and it says that you are under the cap by 5.5 million right now but does Maloney count against the cap? But if you are under the cap could the Rockets sign Jackson to a one year deal worth 5 million,so we(warriors) can't match, and then give Norris the 3.25 medical exception?

Just in case last season was a fluke, Jackson will want more than a one year deal to set himself financially. Not sure the Rockets would want to tie themselves up with a multi-year contract with another 'potential' stiff, a la Cato.

Rockets can sign Marc Jackson to a 2 yr. deal with only 1 yr. guarantee. That would help both partys. He play good they can take the second with option on long term.

The Rockets will use the Early Bird exception to sign Moochie Norris, so what we do with him won't really affect what we can or might do with Marc Jackson.

However, I think RGM actually says the Rockets have $1.35 million in cap space (at most).

Our cap space isn't a danger to anyone. But, if the Rockets offer him the $3.25 million exception, will GS want to pay that much to keep him?

I don't think that GS will try to match the offer because of what they have instead of him. They have Foyle, Dampier, and others to lay if they lose him. They would want to spend the money somewhere else in my opinion.

I think there is a better chance of a sign and trade for Jackson

Who are you going to trade, The Rockets can trade Walt for White, and sign Jackson. I can see that . it gives the Rockets more on the front court.

    SP,

I agree with your scenario as a best bet. GS may want some compensation not to match a Rockets offer below 4.5 mil. Walt would be a good bet.

If the Rockets sign Jones from Memhis. Do a sign and trade with Norris to GW. for Blaylock and Jackson. Walt traded to Washington for White. I think they can make a good season of it. I haven't check realgm. on that trade but it do make sound sense. It take care of the front and the back court.:)

Assuming Jackson leaves anyway and that the Warriors no longer want Blaylock (why would they really with his contract??) then basically the Warriors would be getting Norris (who is a notorious Warriors killer :) ) at a fair deal.

On another note, why does everyone on the board think it is a given that Walt is going to Washington for White? Do you guys know something I don't?

No point doing a S&T if you end up with a moderately expensive unproven player in Mooch or a veteran SF in Walt (who will be a FA next summer).

White to Washington actually sounds possible. White is locked in for a while and really doesn't deserve the money since he's a PF getting away with playing C in the East. Walt is a FA next year so can free up some cap room. IMO I rather not have a 6'9" C whose contract doesn't expire till 2005. Its a good deal for the rebuilding Wizards not for the Rockets.

    1. In a sign-and-trade, Marc Jackson can make, at most, $559,020 and he'd have to sign-on for at least 3 years. I don't think he'll consent to that.

    2. I think (and this is just speculation) that GS would not be allowed to receive compensation for not matching an offer. I read somewhere that teams were not allowed to ask GS whether they'd match a certain offer because it would be deemed collusion. Obviously, the players' union would be upset because it would keep a player's market rate depressed. Maybe Jackson wouldn't complain if we offered every nickel we could muster. Otherwise, though, such an agreement could keep him from making the maximum possible money.

    3. Why not let them keep Marc Jackson and trade for Adonal Foyle instead? Swopa, could GS use a 3-point shooting SF with an expiring contract?
