How long should I keep a razor blade before tossing it out and putting on a new one? I realize the blades get quite costly, and I just want to keep a clean shave. I have mild acne, however, and I cannot keep using the same razor over and over. Are electric razors any good?
I use mach3 turbos, use it till the green strip turns white ( bout 2-3 weeks ) back when i had acne, i went with electric, remington, MUCH easier on the pimples
You won't get as close a shave with an electric razor. Stick with Mach3 Turbo. Just get the blades from Costco or Sams and you'll be good to go for half a year. Just replace it when the lubricating strip turns white.
I also forgot to mention that your blades will last longer if you wash/rinse it with cold water! And make sure to clean them properly.
I disagree, my shave is just as close with my Norelco Advantage compared with any non-electric. I do use non-electrics for lining though.
I have thick coarse hair so it's easy for me to compare. Non electric gives you the closest shave. Most men will tell you the same thing.
electric razors can kiss my ass. for some reason i used one for about 3 years in college before going back to regular. i think because i didn't wanna mess with all the shaving cream and it wasn't all that important that i shave closely. but even then... they don't shave nearly as close, no matter how many times you go back over the same spot or against the grain. it always made my skin feel chafed or burned because you had to go over the same spot so much. it pulled hairs out, especially on this one particular spot, which was a b****. i have no idea why i stuck with it for so long, maybe i had just forgotten what normal felt like and didn't think it would be better. now i use mach 3 power's and absolutely love them. if i shave once a week, the hair is pretty long by then so i can only do it about 2 times. if i shave slighly more often, like twice a week, i can maybe get 3 weeks out of it. once the lubrication strip gets really depleted you know it's time to switch.
if you're going to measure by something other than "when the strip goes white", i'd suggest measuring by # of shaves instead of time. And I usually go about 5-6 shaves between blades. I try to err on the staying-clean side to prevent irritation..
let me tell you i shave every morning for the most part and no bullsh!t i've been on the same mach 3 blade for over 3 months. the indicator strip is long gone but the thing stills cuts very well. i mean i wouldn't wait more then a couple days and still use it but for everyday shave theres no sense in chucking it yet. i think the vibrating thing actually helps sustain the life of the blade. could be a load of crap but i'm saving on blade purchases as it is.
I heard a metallurgist on talk radio one day talking about this. He said that the key to making blades last longer is to DRY them. It's the wetness that dulls the blades not whiskers. So clean and dry your blade, gentlemen.
I think the green lubricating strip was the most brilliant invention ever by gillette. When the strip runs out, everyone throws it away, but the blades are usually fine.
oh yeah, the indicating part is totally worthless but the actual lubrication is pretty nice. it only lubricates for like 2 shaves off a new blade though.
tru skills are defined by using that thing... In saudi a guy shaved my head within 5 minutes using that, and i had hair down to my shoulders at the time... he used nothing but that. cleanest shave ever. plus it gives you that perfect adjustment that no other blade/trimmer gets even close to...
What about those cryogenically treated blades? Supposedly when they are frozen, their durability improves. Do they really last longer?
Rubbing alcohol works wonders for keeping the razor sharp. Just clean your razor after use, and soak it in the rubbing alcohol. The razor will last twice as long at least.
