He does have some stupid fouls but a lot of his foul trouble is because he guards the other bigs for Yao. Like he guards Shaq and crap.

The only issue with Chuck is there is only one of him. This team can use 3 Chucks all missing layups if they all bring the positives.

Same goes with Shane. This team can use 3 Battiers.

I won't get into the discussion here becuase I am more than biased... however, Chuck took a jump shot and made it in our blowout against the Warriors.

i constantly see him shooting it up inside after getting a rebound the HIT THE RIM. shot clock restarts. he really should be taking it back out or passing it out... saw way to many of these recently. and he just throws it up with one arm... great rebounder, terrible shooter.

and what's up with his foul problems, now?

Why does Hayes miss. This needs to be analyzed. He needs to look at film of players his height and athleticism and see the secret to their success.

Kenny Thomas has similar issues of missing shots he should make, but never corrected it.

While he's missing some easy ones, he's making a lot of tough reverse layups in traffic as well. Juwan, now theres a guy who can't even get layups off.

that's the thing i've noticed a lot this year and why i feel hayes is a very good finisher. he's struggled the last two games, but before that he's been very solid.

most of his layups are not just someone handing it to him for a dunk. he's either rolling on a pnr, catches a bullet pass and then has to finish while moving to the basket pretty fast. or he catches it and might have to take one dribble to get by the defender running at him and then finished. and he's finished quite a few this year where he had to contort himself under the basket or go high off glass (before he started missing a lot in the minny game, he had two high off glass finishes).

now none of those things may seem like the most impossible shots, but there are lots of role-playing bigs in this league who blow those all the time. someone mentioned kwame and that guy can miss anything down low. i love the fact that hayes seems to have such a soft touch around the basket and i'm willing to overlook a bad 2 game stretch after a season's worth of good finishing.

plus, he does a really good job of getting to the open spot to be in position for the layup in the first place. there's a reason he's got such a good plus minus, and it's not just because juwan is his backup b/c we're +15.3 when he plays and only -.5 when he doesn't. now if we could just get him to stop fouling so we could have more of that +15 (he's only played 36% of our minutes this year).

Howard's jumpshot is beyond ugly. It's about as good as having eddie griffin shoot 3's to help spread the defense against yao.

Like I said, "when he's knocking them down..."

It might not be great but when hes making them it does spread the court for Yao alot better.

I saw the potential in Hayes last year - one of his developing roles is protecting Yao from foul trouble and he seems to be doing a good job at that. His stupid fouls are gradually decreasing, but he does get a lot of rookie bad calls from the refs - meaning he never gets the benefit of the doubt. He has a ways to go but he continues to look better.

Especially on the offensive end, cutting to the basket, and finding ways to get the putbacks back up and in. I've seen him hacked pretty hard on some putbacks - and again being looked at as a rook - no call.

But he looked like a deer in headlights about to take the hit from a semi last year. He has become much more fluid, seems to know where to be, how to be part of the perimeter offense and passing rotation.

I would expect nothing less from JVG and his assts. than to be coaching the heck out of Chuck. One comment from a Rockets staffer on the Miami 500 trip was that Chuck was in all summer working and he works hard every day to improve - his work ethic is respected.

I too would love to see him add the 10 foot jump shot to his repertroire on a regular basis, and I think he will with time.

I really hope you are kidding. Great in depth analysis on a guy averaging 6 pts and 7.5 rbs in only 22 mpg, & up at the top of the league in +/- stats.

I don't always agree with JVG on his rotation choices but this is one that is obvious and good. With a lot of potential upside.

Remember how far Yao has come? And Luther? I look forward to watching Chuck improve over the rest of the season and then the next few years.

What's wrong with you guys? Hayes is the best combo we have with Yao at the moment. Any time he sets the pick for Mac, with 2 guys watching Yao, it's almost a guaranteed 2 points. You guys really need to watch the games, because then you'd notice that Yao gets doubled a lot more with Juwan or Padgett in the game. After a team gets burned 3 times for a wide open Hayes layup in 2 minutes, that double team is gone and Yao can go to work. They'll let Juwan shoot his weak jumper all day. He also boxes out perfectly on defense and is an extreme nuisance on the offensive boards.

edit: Another thing you guys will notice is that as time goes on in games, a lot more focus gets put on boxing Hayes out, which brings a defender away from Yao and leaves Yao open for offensive boards.

me too il take 3 Hayes blown layups...

with what other things he brings to the table

no one mentioned he helps keeps Yao out of foul trouble...

atleast his shots are high %

really what he needs to do is 500 layups after every practice... and have to

    make 80% of them...

Hayes has been a very plesant suprise to me. His free throws are a concern to me. His recent inability to saty n the floor due to foul trouble, I assume/hope will pass.
