    My guess would be.....No...

First, big acquisitions like this don't take place overnight. It might be two years before the acquision becomes official. Two years is also how long we have left in the Compaq Center. Plus, the construction at the new arena to put up new signs and replace "Compaq" with "Hewlett Packard" everywhere would be too much for a building that will become a church in a couple of years

Also, I don't think that execs at HP are running around yelling, "Oh no!! we have to change the arena name!!" They have more important stuff to worry about, like how many people they will lay off...

so instead of calling it "The Laptop" (like some folks do) we can now call it, "The DeskJet" or something like that?? :D

Compaq Center, Hewlett Packard Center, whatever you want to call it, it will always be The Summit to Rockets fans.

I apologize - should have made my question more clear - just wanted to know if this merger will completely do away w/ the Compaq name, leaving HP as the sole brand.

If this is the anticipated scenario, it is almost a given that the name will change. Complete integration of the co's may take 2yrs, but regulatory approval and stock transfer will not have such a delay. As far as the costs for changing signs and any minor construction involved, it is very doubtful a company that does $90B in revenue will think twice about such expenses. In fact, if any other sports arena gave them free space to advertise their name all over the place for 2years, HP/Compaq would gladly get their signs up ASAP.

I see what you're talking about pip. It depends on whether HP buys the rights to the Compaq name and decides to keep the Compaq name active or whether they decide to effectively "nuke" the name. If they keep the Compaq products alive under the HP line, then I can see them keeping the name without a problem. If they decide to nuke the name, which I kind of doubt, then it's up in the air. My thoughts, if the lease on the deal went another 10 or 20 years they would have changed the name. But since it's up in 2 years they'll keep the name. Just my theory.

As a COMPAQ employee, the answer to your question is that HP will be the final company name. There will be no Compaq branding. The finalization of the merger probably will not occur until the first part of 2002.

What i find funny is that there is also a Compaq Center in California. Plus they have 2 American Airline Centers. What is up with that? They cant find any other companies to sponser their stadium? I swear its going to be like it was in BASEketball one day, with stadiums caled Maxi Tampon stadium etc.....

I hate corporation names on arenas!

If only the new arena could get an original non-advertising name.

Since "Compaq " still is a market share leader in desktops, and since desktops have more public visability that printers and services I would guess that the Compaq brand name will be retained for the Summit. It will take at least a year for all the regulatory approvals for the merger including that pesky EU approval. So at most there would be only a year left before the new arena opens.
Anybody remember the length of the original naming rights agreement? Or if if was tied to the Rockets being there?
Will it be The Lakeview Baptist Church of Hairspray and Trophy Wives At The Compaq Center?

The better question is , who is the leader to buy the naming rights to the new arena? Certainly not the Cali based HP.
Enron has baseball, Reliant has the Dome, Shell has the golf tournament, Continental already has an arena in NJ. Andarko moved to the Woodlands. Dynegy has had their market cap crushed.
I would like to see the city wait till Mayor Bob passes and name it after him, Although they didn't wait for Geo. Bush on the airport.

or better yet just name it.......Clutch City

Anybody remember that comment Charles Barkley made a few years ago? He said something like "Until I get a free laptop from Compaq, I'm going to keep calling it the Summit."

Hilarious. Now it's "Until I get a free desktop from HP, I'm going to keep calling it the Compaq Center."

Hey, I like the season tickets for laid-off Compaq employees
idea. Any other things you folks can think of to add to the severance package when some of us get lopped off would be
    greatly appreciated.

Why don't they just call it the "Lame-Duck Lounge"?

It is a good question as to who will bid for the naming rights for
the new arena. There are still a lot of oil interests in this town who are doing quite well with the barrel price increases over the last year. "Pennzoil Center", perhaps?
