And thanks for proving my point about "where player were rated" versus production.

Honestly, and I might get flamed for this, but I'd much rather have Garland than Pettite.

Garland is younger, with a much higher ceiling, and he's pitching at about the same level as Pettite right now. Plus, he's cheaper, and would still allow us to sign Aubrey Huff back, who I think we could use.

Well, we got Luke Scott for him, and that's looking pretty good right about now. He had 7 starts with Norfolk (NYM-AAA) in 2006. Sucked hard -- 7.68 ERA.

Now we just need to do with our modern day Jeriome Robertson and deal Wandy Rodriguez for some prospects.

I wouldn't trade Hirsh for Garland straight up much less throwing others in the deal. Now Hirsh and others for Jake Peavy, there's something to talk about.

you shouldn't get flamed for that. i think i agree, at this point. except that...getting pettitte means you don't have to give up other players. getting garland means you do.

In a sense it almost does, as Pettite's asking price is rumored to be pretty steep. In other words, Aubrey Huff would be gone.

In my opinion, he would/will have a good year for us next year. (Huff)

Visions of Scott Elarton go dancing through my head ...

I don't mind giving up Hirsh and Bucholz, they really didn't show much promise last yr, and we are trying to win a WS right now. Plus Garland is only 27. But if Willy T goes, then Burke is in center and Biggio is the full time 2B. And next yr we have no CF to take over. Willy played some run saving defense this yr, and he is the only guy with bigtime speed and the speed is a threat.

    But a rotation of:

    Oswalt
    Garland
    Pettitte
    Clemens
    Williams

Wow. That would have been a RIDICULOUS pithcing staff, as I do think both Pettitte and Clemens will return to the Astros.

I'm not sure how fast Hunter Pence is, but he might be able to handle Center.

They were experimenting with Pence in center towards the end of last season, iirc.

Which leads anyone to believe that Willy is definitely expendable.

I wish we could land Garland or Peavy.

Elarton was an excellent pitcher until he injured himself.

With the exception of 2005, Jon Garland has basically been an average starter his whole career. Hirsh can do that for about 10 million less. I'm surprised so many of you are head over heels for the likes of Jon Garland, especially at his salary.
