http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4385643.html Dec. 7, 2006, 9:27AM Astros set to get pitcher Jon Garland from White Sox By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Astros are set to announce the acquisition of Jon Garland from the Chicago White Sox in a trade that will bolster the starting rotation and place him behind ace righthander Roy Oswalt. The deal was close, according to Tal Smith, the Astros’ president of baseball operations. It will be announced shortly at Walt Disney's Swan and Dolphin Resort this morning.
The rumor at the winter meetings is that Willy Taveras and Taylor Buchholz will be sent to the White Sox for Garland, but Smith wouldn't divulge the players the Astros will send to Chicago.
Not considering pitcher/hitter adjustments changing leagues, his ERA should be lower in the NL Regardless, way to go Timmy P. (MAybe I should wait and see who we gave up)
don't you think willy t and buckholz is a lot for a career 4.50 era guy? and this probably means no pettitte.
They already have Podsednik, and are trying to GET RID of all their starting pitchers. Why would they want this trade?
what would they do with willie and podsednik? doesnt make a ton of sense...then again, neither does trading away 2 good starters
I am wondering the same thing. We don't have anyone else on the roster that I know of that can play center field. And now who will leadoff for the Stros???
They did try to trade for Figgins. Guess those Sox want the toolsy-kinds of players (I believe Ozzie wanted to sign Pierre).
As an American League fan, I can tell you that Garland is a great get if he does indeed come to Houston. His era was MUCH better after the All-star break and he posted sub 3 era in July and August. THe Chicago pitching coach always said he had the best stuff on the staff, but there was a lot of talk that he was just overworked last year and was a little beat up this season. Good trade.
