Anyone using Vista yet? I've been beta testing the software for about 2 months now, with few problems. Mostly driver related issues are the main faults of it so far. It took me about two days to get used to the interface, but overall its crisp looking. Has an Apple MAC OS X interface feel to it. Vista beta takes about 12 GB of hard drive space on a fresh install. Interesting sidenote, is that the original name for Vista was Longhorn. Don't know why they changed it.
12 GB of hard drive?? and you pretty much need 1 GB of RAM. This crap keeps getting more and more bloated. Microsoft software is the epitome of what programmers should not do. Oh yea, nice to see that they rip of Mac OS again. What else is new? I'm glad IE finally has some competition with Firefox coming around but it would be nice if Windows could actually have some too.
lol...I can honestly say I haven't had any problems with Microsoft OSes in a while. both win2k and winXP SP2 are totally rock solid on all my personal computers and laptops (win95 and winME were different stories) what makes windows bloated is people who install a bunch of sh!tty random third party programs on it
I agree on those 2, but from what i've heard (and I haven't tried them myself, so it's just hearsay)...Vista really does hog your RAM a lot more than either of the 2 OS's you mentioned. If you have a system with 2 GB of RAM, it'll run like anything else is what everything seems to say.. but I don't, and I'm not gonna deal with it until I have to. I'm over getting the latest stuff as soon as it comes out
They've always got "code names" for their OS's before they are released. Do you honestly think that it would've been good marketing to name a Windows OS "Longhorn"?
And this is exactly why my IT Department won't be upgrading any of our computers any time soon. Windows peaked with XP, IMO. It's problems are very small. Why change? Vista will get good market penetration due to being bundled with new computers and bigger companies moving over due to refresh schedules, but that's about it for the first few years, IMO.
ahh... well I haven't tried Vista myself either, so we'll just have to see when the actual retail release comes out (I don't trust betas). if it's sluggish with 1 gig ram, then that will suck
Mulder, that is golden stuff right there . You guys at your campus trying it out, yet? We're not. jtotheb, I would assume that they'd want to use the code name right after this past Rose Bowl... what with the UT win and what noe. Hey, chow_yun_fat, that's a joke, right? No way they could have done that.
Nope. I'm at the Business School now and the IT guys are talking late 2007 for a roll out here. Some people can barely use a computer, so sticking a N00B end user with a new OS is a Bad Idea.
When I was at HP, we were told that Vista Premium would take up around 30 GB of space. So you can imagine that for a company that sold laptops with 40 GB internal drives, this news would present a big problem...
An interesting feature of Vista is the readyboost. It allows you to stick a USB drive in and use the free space on the USB drive as extra RAM.
It has to be flash memory, right? I don't think platter hard drives would be fast enough to make any more of a difference than good old "Virtual Memory" did. But that's pretty darn cool.
People have got to realize that with new operating systems bringing new technologies which inturn requirre more power, that they will need to upgrade certain components. You had to have a more powerful system for '98, and XP....now Vista. It's nothing new. I'm happy it's almost in my hands.
