actually, i’d list troy aikman as exhibit A; roethlisberger exhibit B. do you realize, in 12 seasons, aikman threw 20 or more TDs just once? one time. 1. hell, he topped 15 just 4 times in his career. and yet, he went to 6 pro bowls, won 3 SBs and landed in the hall of fame. would you take a troy aikman in his prime and put him under center here in houston? if no, why not? young may indeed be a difference maker, but what good is a difference maker if pacman jones isn’t hawking every football thrown and travis henry isn’t running up huge rushing totals? oh, sure – maybe 1 or 2 times a year, young can put a team on his back and carry it, but over a 16-game schedule, those moments are going to be fleeting if you don’t surround him with talent. even sunday, as i’ve tried to point out, he needed not only an unbelievable 4Q performance from jones, but also the giants to completely fall apart. and when circumstances like that do happen to randomly align, hell, even guys like frank reich can take advantage. well, by that rationale, build and wait for your QB in 2-3 years, which they can now do since carr's deal will be done then, right? otherwise, you risk exposing young to the same consistent level of punishment carr's endured thus far. but i see your point. my guess is that kubiak was soooooo focused on carr that the rest of the team's ineptness didn't really come into focus until he saw it up close and personal. i would be shocked if he knew the team was this bad or that far away. vince young's a great talent, but guys keep acting like guys like him are few and far between, even though they'll freely admit this past draft alone contained three potential difference makers. since 2001, the nfl has added vick, brees, palmer, manning, rivers, roethlisberger and then young, leinart and cutler. nine established or potential difference makers in six years... franchise QBs are not exactly scarce from year to year.
They should just take the Brady/Romo route. Continue to build the rest of the team through the draft and take 8th round/FA flyers on guys with potential and winning backgrounds. We'll either end up with a great team and a steal at QB or we still have the option of getting a FA QB like Brees when the team is good enough to warrant it. I would have taken VY but that's the past so whatever.
ric -- i think higher of VY than i let on. i mention the other 2 to temper my posts. i'll be completely honest, i think they were nuts to pass on VY because they had David Carr. i recognize kubiak knows tons more about football than i'll ever know...but that's how i feel.
I agree at this point as well. Carr has enough promise to just try to mix in flyers. It was just last year the Texans were in the primo draft spot with an extra special pick opp, but that is in the past and just do the best you each year.
