I'm headed to New Orleans for New Years. I've been there in the past, but I've started watching a lot of shows on the food network, travel channel, history channel, etc. and I saw a lot of can't miss places to eat on those shows. So two things: Does anyone know where to locate these shows/reviews on the net? Does anyone know some can't miss places in New Orleans? Thanks.
Brennans is probably the most famous restaraunt in NO, they have one in Houston, but NO is the original. I had brunch there 2 months back, it was pretty good. Don't forget to check out Cafe Du Monde for some coffee and beignets.
Already knew about Cafe Du Monde and Brennans. I'm looking to find places near the quarter where locals go.
Stop in Baton Rouge for ribs at T J Ribs. Someone from the board recommended that place, and it was the highlight of my trip. Plus, they've got some pretty cool Shaq memorabilia there.
Hit the Boudan King in Jennings, LA. Middle of nowhere shack, but the food rocks. It's about 5 minutes off I-10.
Okay, been to any of these Cajun places?? K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen (Paul Prudhomme's place) Brigtsen's
I was there before all the bad stuff, but maybe the places are still there...I heard Leach is going there...oh wait... Bella Luna is great, romantic, if that's what you're going for. I tried that Commander's Palace and wasn't impressed...NOLA's was good (Emeril's rest.)...Other than that, I got nothing... Mulate's is good, but i've only been to the one in Breaux Bridge, LA
here you go. I can't recommend it strong enough. You HAVE to have the char-broiled oysters as an appetizer. http://www.dragosrestaurant.com/index2.htm
Emeril Lagasse’ place is close to the quarter and we loved it when we went a couple of years ago. Although be prepared to drop some coin. I think we dropped 3 bills for dinner and drinks for two. He’s got three restaurants in NO so the one we went to was called simply Emeril’s New Orleans
How about Napolean's Cafe on Chartres, if you're concerned about price? I've been to Broussard's and Armauds. Those are good, probably too expensive based on your comments. I liked them better than Emeril's. The Gumbo Shop is casual and very popular. Nice setting. I tend to say it's overrated considering the line to get in, but I hear from friends that there is no lines in NOLA now. So, that shouldn't be a problem. Honestly though, imo, you are contradicting yourself. You want cajun where the locals go in the quarters, but not too expensive? That's not where they go. Jacques-Imo's Cafe is a must do if you can make it out there. Not within walking distance, but it is where locals go. anyhoot, what I'd recommend is going to Napolean's, sit at the bar, get a muffuleta--the place has awesome atmosphere--and after a few drinks, ask the bartender for a recommendation. I bet you he will say Jacques-Imo's. lol
Good suggestions. And believe me, there are always inexpensive places in any tourist city that locals go to. The overpriced places are for tourists that don't know any better. Let me know if you go. We'll be at the Marriott in the Quarter. And to everyone else: We can't come up with anything regarding good websites with food critics reviewing food places? Kinda like Robb Walsh in Houston?
Rachael Ray went to dinner at <a href="http://www.brigtsens.com/">Brigtens</a> on here <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_ad/episode/0,,FOOD_9947_23060,00.html">$40/day show</a> about NOLA.
Try the Gambit Weekly rag. They have a new Restuarant Review section. Not sure how well the website archives, though. here: http://www.bestofneworleans.com
Can't speak too much for NO itself other than the usual suspects but plan on stopping for lunch in Lake Charles (about 2 hours from Houston on I-10) and eat at Steamboat Bill's, which is right off the interstate. Anything there is good but the pistole's are my favorite (kind of like a donut sans the sugar stuffed with crawfish or shrimp etouffee).
