Ok, I went and picked up the HD-DVD and VGA cable. The problem I am having is that with the VGA cable the picture looks washed out. I've done a little research online and it looks like I'm not the only person to have this problem. Anyone here have any of the same issues? Any possible resolutions? I'm hooking it up to a 46" Samsung LCD 1080p.
Yeah, I'm reading different things back and forth when it comes to VGA. Seems to just vary from model to model of TV. Any reason you wanted to go VGA primarily?
VGA is the only way to get 1080p on the 360 IIRC. Since he has a 1080p TV, I'm guessing that is the reason.
yeah what RC said. also, VGA is the only way to upscale normal DVDs to 720p/1080i/1080p unfortunately, VGA also has a problem with color vibrancy...the picture is more flat than component. the latest xbox dashboard patch last week did alleviate the problem a bit, it was worse before. but on some HDTVs, it still doesn't quite compare to component as far as color
I bought it because it is (allegedly) the only way to upconvert standard DVD's plus everyone raved at "how much better" the picture is. I'm kind of pissed at it right now.
well the first part or your statement *is* correct...just not the latter part <edit> also you need to keep in mind, those people who rave at how much better the VGA cable picture is, are the ones who probably have a SDTV but then switched the 360 to their LCD computer monitors with the VGA hookup. in their cases, that would most certainly make the picture much better
I have the VGA hooked up to my LCD monitor and the picture looks fine. Did you adjust the resolution in the XBox display settings?
well like I said, people who play their 360s on a LCD computer monitor through the VGA cable mostly think it looks fine. have you hooked up your 360 to a big screen HDTV through component? that's where the comparisons come in...check this thread and these pics out: http://www.gamingtrend.com/forums/index.php/topic,16535.msg212784.html#msg212784 most big-screen HDTV owners have had the same experiences with the VGA cable as the guy who took the pics above
According to the xbox website, you can get 1080p through component... not sure about upconverting DVD's though.
Oh yeah. Sorry, I was referring to video (as in movies, not games) output only (my mind was on that since he mentioned the HD-DVD addon). 1080p through component is possible for games, assuming the TV can handle it (not many can IIRC). Now that I think about it, movies from the HDD or non-"Hollywood" movies on discs might play in 1080p via component. Not sure though.
RC is right about this, you can only get 1080p through component for games. it is a 100% fact that for movies/DVDs discs, the 360 will only output those in 720p/1080i/1080p through the VGA cable now I'm not talking about if your HDTV will automatically upconvert a 480p signal into its own native rez, that's different. I'm talking about what the 360 will natively output the source at. and if you're using component, then that will always be 480p for movie discs
