Peter Vecsey reported that NJ proposed to trade Jason Collins and a 2nd rounder to Portland for Jamaal Magloire. Portland rejected and asked for Collins + a 1st rounder (and I guess NJ doesn't want to give up a 1st rounder for a possible 1 year rental). Interesting... I like Collins a lot... I wonder if Rocket can somehow manage to get in on the deal (with Wells and Howard) and snag Collins.
That wouldn't work for NJ - they're desperate for serious help at the 4/5 spot. Howard is no better than Collins overall and Bonzi can't be moved for another few weeks. Magloire would be a good catch for them, but a first rounder is stretching it. Evan

I've read before that Collins rates extremely well defensively by statheads. This trade won't happen unless there's a first rounder involved. Portland has no reason to add a year of salary on a big guy when they've already got several. A first rounder might tempt them, but a second rounder? Please.
Collins is one of the best man to man post defenders around. He always does a pretty decent job against Yao.
I was thinking something like giving Howard to Portland, Bonzi to NJ and getting Jason Collins + some small contract in return (Maybe Eddie House, Jeff McInnis, just to make the salaries match-- Maybe even Boki Nachbar, if the Rockets wants him still). Maybe Magloire isn't worth a 1st rounder by himself, but if NJ gets both Magloire and Wells, perhaps they'd be willing to give one up. As good of a defender and team guy collins is, his offense has gotten to the point where playing him more than 20 mins is a stretch let alone start him
Collins kills a team offensively, but he was a huge reason that team did anything last year. The Nets were a top-3 defensive team last year, even with a weak bench, Kristic figuring it out, Kidd slowing down, etc. The trade makes no sense to me on NJ's end -- Collins is really hurting them offensively right now, but Mags is SO FREAKIN' BAD. Overrated on offense, good defender, kills the ball movement and is 1/10th the screen-setter Collins is.
But he can rebound. And the Nets need rebounding. Good screen setting is not that integral to NJ's success in my opinion. For all their talent, the Nets are so offensively uncreative and almost inept. They end up with tough shots all the time, and it's the talent of Vince Carter to make those tough shots that give them the chance of winning. Collins doesn't do anything for them that's overly important.
Oh, hell yes, but I can't see the two other teams being that crazy. (the Rocks certainly would) Unless Bonzi shows that he can still bring it before the deadline, this whole idea of trading him for anything of value is dead, anyway.
Ideally, Mags would be that guy. But remember how everything bogged down in Milwaukee last year with him on the floor? Not even in comparison to the passing Bogut, I'm talking Smith or Gadz on the floor -- when Mags was out there, the whole offense was dying. And their best play with Williams running the point is that 1/5 screen with Collins or Mikki setting and slipping. If Magliore is the backup PF/C that is on the floor, then New Jersey is going to be -1 trillion with the second unit out there, and that's a significant increase on their -1 billion showing right now.
LOL. Yeah, you're right. But, I just don't know what I'd do if I were New Jersey. They're a really unbalanced team with many flaws. They thrived in a weak east last year, and will probably do the same this year. If you tweak here and there, they could possibly come out of the East, but what do you tweak? Maybe they need better 3pt shooters and rebounders...I don't know. I just don't like their style. Unless they're running well (which Magloire could help with his rebounding), then their offense is just very ugly and talent dependent. As for bench production, why don't they just let Marcus Williams loose and not try to do anything other than give him the ball. I think they did that once this year before. And I actually think Magloire would be starting with Nenad, Kidd, Carter, and Jefferson. Magloire could really help give them 2nd chances to all those clanged 3pters they put up, and also relieve Kidd of some of his rebounding duties and let him run more. I'm just not sure, but the way New Jersey is now, I don't see them being a championship contender.

He's been doing this for years.

Yea I laugh when I see obvious contradictions to reality. Really makes you wonder, is it really that hard to be an "expert analyst"
