Why does UT play Sam Houston State? Why does ANY major school play early season games against much lesser opponents?

Because it is GOOD for the smaller school in terms of bringing them publicity and it is GOOD for the bigger school in giving them a warm-up win.

Schools do this in football and basketball every season for their mutual benefit.

I guess. But with Sam Houston at least it's in-state and I can see why there is interest. But this is like UT beating up on Connecticut Community College. No one really cares.
But I guess you're right about good publicity for the smaller school.

was this being played at TSU?

if it was being played at TSU, it was so UConn can recruit in the Houston area.

    edit.

i guess it was in CT.

    nvm.
