It is still early in the season, but just wanted to point out that only one person in the history of the NBA has accomplished what Kevin Martin is doing right now:

    combo of:
    20+ ppg
    50%+ FG%
    40%+ 3FG%
    90%+ FT%

    that player is Larry Bird

Thing is that Kevin Martin has a great deal of cushion here. He's 22+ ppg, 54% FG, 49% 3s, 90.1% FTs (well, the FTs are tight).

I've been watching the Kings a lot and reading their fan board off-and-on ever since Cat and now K9 went there. Martin is not really a surprise to be a starter for the Kings, one of those guys who the fans have been screaming for more PT.

But man, NO ONE expected this. I've seen 4 games this year and keep waiting for him to come down to earth expecting defenses to start guarding him more. They are, but... so far he's still getting picks and getting his shot off with ease.

There is no other player at this time that is going to get it other than these 2. They are both playing great.

As far as Martin, he just didn't get any minutes last year. Every time he started or got minutes he put up those kind of numbers.

It's funny they call it the most improved player. It just should be the best player that is getting minutes this year and had none last year.

I agree he should have taken in WAY more minutes last year, but he wasn't putting up these sort of scoring numbers last year. He averaged 16 points per 40 minutes last season, and now he's averaging 25 points per 40.

I don't mind looking like a self-absorbed douche by saying that I and a few others knew Martin would be a 25-points per game scorer someday, we just didn't think it would be in his third year.

My guess for No. 3 would be Monta Ellis.

I've only watched a little of him this year. Can the guy create his own shot at all? Or does he rely on drive-and-kicks and coming off screens? Just wondering what kind of potential he really has in that sense. How often does he take it to the rim in a halfcourt set? How is his passing? Or is he more of just a scorer?

And yeah, don't forget Monta Ellis.

Deron Williams is another strong candidate for MIP. Since Biedrins came out of nowhere, I say he is the top candidate.

    1) Biedrins
    2) Kevin Martin
    3) Deron Williams
    4) Monta Ellis

Outside of these four, I don't see anybody else coming close. You can say Zach Randolph, but he is just getting back into his old form of 3 years ago.

While Peja was still in Sactown last year, Martin's scoring numbers were below 16 per 40 min. If you look at his number post-Peja, then you would see numbers that rival what he is putting up this year...or at least close to it.

He just needed the PT and the ball. With Stojack in the lineup, he lost many shot opportunities.

almost several times. Most notable was a 19.9 pt year with every other stat accomplished. (Surprisingly he missed solely on FT% a couple of times.) We can probably say that Reggie would have made it had he been shooting from the closer 3pt range his whole career.

The Larry Bird factoid was reported by ESPN in the Kings/Dallas game. I'm assuming it to be true.

as great as martin has been this year, to say "just hand him the award now" is ridiculous. the true test of EVERY nba player is the ability to be consistent over the marathon of an 82-game season.

to be brutally honest, most players in the nba can put together a month or two of great basketball. the test for martin, beidrins, ellis and any other young player playing great right now is to be playing this well the last month of the season, helping their team to a playoff birth.

Totally, but it certainly wasn't 25 per 40. I'll check it out later this afternoon.

You're right. The thread title is ridiculous and for effect. Notice I didn't mention the MIP once in my posts. I'm actually more interested in the stat factoid that Martin is tracking than MIP talk.

lol, i read the OP and my first thought was, "When the hell did Kenyon Martin get traded to Sactown, and why would Sactown do that?"
