What about stereotypes of penis size or other manisfestions of masculinity? How many black men have avoided being mugged or assualted because of stereotyping? How many black guys have gotten laid because of stereotyping? It's all dumb to an extent, but you have to be against it all or be a hypocrite. I hate this "oh but it's different when we're talking about intelligence." BS. Job hiring is done based on GPA, school, test scores, experience, and references. Loans are done based on credit score.
now you're just being naive. believe me, man walks in bank for $100K business loan, everything is evaluated about him, age, race, marital status, everything, besides actual credit. I know, i was one of the people doing the evaluating. its all silly as far as stereotyping but lets just look at the sexual prowess stereotype. that's negative because it suggests black men can't control their sexual urges. and if you think it wasn't negative, just look at some of the trials in history that led to lynchings. black man falsely accused of raping white woman is high on the list.
Unfortunately, there's an intellectual dishonesty that still permeates our society where we attempt to distinguish, rationalize, and contextualize things in an effort to justify why "this" is ok, but "that" isn't. The problem with this is, as humans, we're sometimes guided by a blinding subjectivity that clouds our rational thought. At the end of the day we have to determine, as a society, what's acceptable and what's not. If we try hard enough, we can distinguish how almost *anything* is different from something else. There are very few instances where there will be specific, apple-to-apple comparisons in life. That's what makes it so dangerous in attempting to justify distinguishing Irvin's statements with that of somebody else. Why it's "ok" for one person to say such things but lambaste another for making similiar remarks? It's not. Bottom line. These double-standards do nothing but propogate the division between certain groups of people.
I believe you, I guess. I'm just saying that I'd much rather people just admit that it's all stupid rather than try to pick and choose which stereotyping is acceptable. Asian men and black women get screwed on sexual stereotyping because asians as a whole are seen as feminine (thus why Asian women are prizes) and blacks as a whole are seen as masculine. There are lots of negative stereotypes out there and I think it's incredibly self-centered to consider only ones that impact you to be harmful.
I guess this thing isn't as huge a story as other similar comments because it's not a suprise. We've all known Michael Irvin is r****ded for years. Michael Richards... well, that was a suprise.
exactly, I was just comparing the two stereotypes that were brought up. there are incredibly negative stereotypes of asians, jews, whites, etc. that I can think of. and secondly, I'm no way trying to justify what irvin said, it was a stupid joke that went way to far. if he was fired I wouldn't complain.
okay, hate to bring this thread back up, but they were doing a story on romo on espn, and they said he was a third generation mexican american. his father is hispanic. thought that was funny.
That's why he's so good...Hispanic blood in him... btw, I'm assuming nothing every happened to that fool...Saw a little of Irvin today and changed the channel...
His grandfather born in Coahuila, Mexico and then he moved to San Antonio, Texas, Tony Romo full name is: Antonio Ramiro Romo.
The "black slave athlete" analogy was the same, and Jimmy was in an informal enough setting (in a bar I believe) to think his comments were off the record, but there is a fundamental difference between a white man calling a black person a slave, and a black person calling a white man a poor athlete.
