1. The list has not been updated for tonight's games. I took my numbers off Yahoo Sport, and don't have the energy to add in all the games from tnight. 2. TS% (True Shooting %) is a statistic that measures shooting efficiency by adjusting the FG% by incorporating 3 pt shooting and FT%. TS%= [Points/(FG attempted+ 0.44*FT attempted)]/2 3. TS% has not explicitly account for the effect of teams turning the ball over without taking a shot. 4. Generally I think TS% is a decent measure of how efficiently a team scores once a shot si put up. It's a better measurement than points total (because teams don't play at the same pace) and it's a better measurement for regular FG% (teams that take a lot of FTs and 3s are underrated by regular FG%). 5. So, the rankings up til yesterday: Own TS% from highest to lowest: Phoenix Suns 58.01% Golden State Warriors 56.11% Utah Jazz 55.99% Orlando Magic 55.63% Los Angeles Lakers 55.62% San Antonio Spurs 55.31% Houston Rockets 55.13% Denver Nuggets 55.09% New Jersey Nets 54.85% Dallas Mavericks 54.76% Boston Celtics 54.65% Portland Trail Blazers 54.60% Detroit Pistons 54.46% Seattle SuperSonics 53.97% Milwaukee Bucks 53.92% Sacramento Kings 53.83% Minnesota Timberwolves 53.74% New York Knicks 53.56% Philadelphia 76ers 53.20% Cleveland Cavaliers 52.99% Atlanta Hawks 52.66% Chicago Bulls 52.23% Washington Wizards 52.15% Los Angeles Clippers 52.11% Toronto Raptors 51.99% Miami Heat 51.90% Indiana Pacers 51.16% Memphis Grizzlies 50.97% Charlotte Bobcats 50.64% New Orleans/OklaCity Hornets 49.86% Opponent TS% (from lowest to highest) Houston Rockets 51.13% Charlotte Bobcats 51.32% Atlanta Hawks 51.33% Orlando Magic 51.76% San Antonio Spurs 51.80% Minnesota Timberwolves 52.21% Cleveland Cavaliers 52.40% New Orleans/OklaCity Hornets 52.41% New Jersey Nets 52.48% Indiana Pacers 52.51% Miami Heat 52.86% Los Angeles Clippers 52.94% Boston Celtics 53.38% Memphis Grizzlies 53.48% Detroit Pistons 53.52% Phoenix Suns 53.68% Golden State Warriors 53.72% Dallas Mavericks 53.83% New York Knicks 54.15% Toronto Raptors 54.18% Los Angeles Lakers 54.23% Utah Jazz 54.34% Philadelphia 76ers 55.10% Washington Wizards 55.11% Denver Nuggets 55.16% Sacramento Kings 55.47% Chicago Bulls 56.61% Seattle SuperSonics 56.71% Milwaukee Bucks 56.77% Portland Trail Blazers 56.93% 6. Rockets tops the league in lowest opponent TS%. So, their scoring defense has been more than just a product of playing at a slower pace and the low FG% D is not a result of just allowing opponents to launch 3s. 7. "Strength of schedule" is a factor since the Rockets have faced two of the lowest TS% teams and each NBA team has played a significantly different schedule from one another at this point of the season. However, the predominant majority of teams Rockets have faced shoot a TS% over the 51.13% the Rockets have allowed for the season. Their opponents don't just shoot as low as 51.13% in their other games. It could be that a patsy schedule padded their stats, but chances are they are pretty good to start with. 8. What might suprise some is that the Rockets are scoring pretty efficiently when they do launch their shots, even though TO is still a problem. Their 93.8 ppg average coming into tonight's game could mislead one into thinking that their offense is not good. It's methodical, maybe slow, but efficient, as long as they don't turn the ball over prior to launching a shot. Their 44.9% FG likewise is somewhat misleading. This puts them slightly below average among NBA teams, but due to the fact that a high % of their shots are 3s and FTs, their TS% actually rank 7th in the league so far. 9. Again, a patsy schedule may have helped. But few teams have allowed 55% opponent TS% that the Rockets have shot during the season.
Are you Stan or Pops. If your not Pops you got to be a relative. Cause every freaking post is how wonderful your the man is. My guess is you're Poppa Gundy. If you are could you please tell your son to quit being so stubborn about rookies and Euros and play Vspan. It makes him look like an idiot when he refuses to use Vspan correctly. Vspan is a better point guard than Alston and Head, anyone can see that. I think your son can see that also but sometime he is a moron. If you are not Pops you must be JVG's Lesbian Lover and I am sure he will listen to you as well. So break the news to him.
TS% is definitely a better reflection of a team's offensive efficiency than PPG is. I'm not surprised that we rank high for TS% and not for PPG, because we play a slow half-court set with Yao as the centerpiece. I'm surprised that NO/Okla is dead last in TS%, considering how well Chris Paul is playing. And Barkley picked them to make the playoffs over us? Time to kiss ass again Sir Charles.
Sortable Four Factors for every team is also useful: http://www.knickerblogger.net/stats/2007/o_oe.htm We're currently 7th best in shooting from the field (eFG), and 4th limiting shooting% from the field. We're 7th best in defensive rebounding (or limiting opponent's OREB%). Biggest problem for the team is turnovers. We're second worst in the league. If we can fix that, we'll be very good.
LOL If you want to be accurate call me Grandpa Rocket. No matter what my opinion of a player personally I root for what's best for the team; and what;s best for the team is Van Gundy be gone soon.
We also hold opponents to the lowest assist numbers in the league. That is essential if facing teams like Phoenix, who need to have that tempo to be succesful. I hope we play them in the first round. I would love to eliminate them. Battier does a great job on Marion, and Yao always wins the individual matchup with pre-injury Amare. I think we can really throw a wrench in their offense. V-Span could perhaps, by the end of the season, be a disruptive force that causes trouble for Nash.
Ok, this measures how well or poorly the opponents shoot against us. Is this a good indicator of our defense level? Like you said, it doesnt count opponents TO due to pressure defense, it doesnt count what kind of shots are launched. It doesnt say whether the shots are contested. You can have a opposing team shooting 100% by only attempting one and making it. This then will not tell the defense actually shut the opponent down. Of course this is a extreme case, just want to show it might not be a good indicator.
My point is that it is a better indicator of what happens once a shot is put up than Points per game and reguar FG%. The teams with the lower opposing TS% on balance are not giving up easy baskets despite allowing a low FG%, either by leaving 3 pt shooters open or committing silly fouls. To the extent they give up shots, these are generally low value shots like 2 pt jumpers. And I fail to see how "OMG Van Gundy hates rookies" has anything to do with the discussion. Are you saying the Offense doesn't run well with Alston at the PG? If so, show some evidence. Are you saying that the TS% is misleading somehow? Then inform us how it is so and what the proper measure is.
yeah, because this team is really underachieving with only the 4th best record of the league. come on, you know better than to hate.
hahahah but really How can he have Span play the 2 or like yestersday the 3, thats emberassing, its so see thru
It's obvious after even a cursory analysis (or even just watching a friggin game) that the Hou defense is much more than 'slowing the game down', the oft-repeated mantra of Kenny and Chuckie.
Tonight will be a big test, the other team's strength is our biggest weakness. PG penetration. Hopefully V-SPan will get some time guarding Nash. DD
beg to differ it may seem like the biggest weakness since your current man-crush is on a PG but I think few would argue against it being said that our biggest weakness is what do we do when chuckie leaves the floor.
Excellent thread. About the TO's: Isn't Yao culprit #1? And don't we keep throwing it in there (when we can) anyway, because the percentage on a Yao shot is so good it outweighs the TO's? I'm not saying TO's are OK -- just that to some extent, they may be part of an inescapable equation when you run your offense through a slow big guy. No excuse for what the guards cough up.
This is a better and fairer way to compare teams defense/offense efficiency. Rockets is a better offense team than you could expect, just as the stats show. We dont score higher points as Jazz/Suns because we are playing at a much lower speed and dont shoot the ball as often as some other teams do. If we can slow the opponent speed and let them shoot the ball at the comparable times as we do, we have a good chance to win the ball game. Tonight will be a good test to see if we can control the tempo of Suns.
