I think that Germany has a very good chance to win the European Championships with Nowitzki and Shawn Bradley in the frontcourt. There are also a few more players on the team with US (college) experience, like Ademola Okulaja (who is replacing Pau Gasol at CF Barcelona) or Patrick Femerling. Main competitors are Yugoslavia with Pedrag Stojakovic and Lithuania, I think. Will be interesting to watch. Any other European fans here following this?

Not that anyone cares ;), but Nowitzki already led the German team to two wins with 33 points against Estonia and 31 points against Croatia...

Bradley was pretty much a non-factor...

Well it would appear Peja did not agree

    Stojakovic, Yugoslavia top Nowitzki's Germany

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

ANTALYA, Turkey -- Peja Stojakovic of the Sacramento Kings scored a game-high 22 points, including five 3-pointers, as Yugoslavia beat Germany 86-73 Sunday to reach the European Basketball Championship quarterfinals.

Germany could not keep pace with the deep Yugoslavian squad, which went 3-0 in group play.

Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki had just four points for Germany by halftime and finished with 15 when he fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.

Germany's other Mavericks player, center Shawn Bradley, was ineffective in limited action. Germany, which was led by Ademola Okulaja's 18 points, will have to win a one-game playoff Monday to stay in the tournament.

Yugoslavia got 17 points from Seattle Supersonics draft pick Predrag Drobnjak and held Germany to 7-for-28 shooting in the first half en route to a 41-26 lead.

"We played very professionally in the first half, but we let the game slip out of our control in the second," German coach Sveteslav Pesic said. "We won't let that happen again."

Yugoslavia has won four of the last six European titles and entered the 16-team tournament as the favorite.

Turkey, meanwhile, upset Spain 84-79. Pau Gasol, the third pick in the NBA draft, had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Spain.

In other games, Olympic silver medalist France beat bronze medalist Lithuania 76-65, and Greece beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 101-77. Also, defending champion Italy defeated Russia 64-58, Croatia beat Estonia 81-69, Israel topped Ukraine 88-65, and Latvia beat Slovenia 99-93 in overtime. Radoslav Nesterovic of the Minnesota Timberwolves was one of three Slovenians with 19 points.

Germany will come back to destroy Yugoslavia in the finals. Dirk is clearly the better player compared to Stojakovic. Peja is a great player, but Dirk is a Superstar type of player. He is only getting better and better and will be pretty much unstoppable this coming season. He will ascend into the elite level of Shaq, Kobe, Garnett, Duncan and Francis. You saw him drop 45 on the Spurs last year in the playoffs and that was only the beginning. This year, with a better supporting cast, including Nash, Finley, Hardaway, a healthy Buckner, etc...he will be even better. Last year, he was in the top 20 in the NBA in 16 (!) categories. Check this out:

    http://www.nba.com/playerfile/dirk_nowitzki/index.html?nav=page

Regarding today's game, the reason for Germany's loss was a lack of concentration in the beginning, some unnecessary fouls by Dirk and a strong showing of the Yugoslavian team who, at this point, have more depth than the German team. They have a very good team, including Stojakovic, Obradovic, Tarlac, and three other players whose names I have forgotten but who could play in the NBA. I really do believe that the US will have to show much better performances at the next Olympics or World Championships to beat both Yugoslavia (with Stojakovic, Divac) and Germany (with Nowitzki, Bradley, Okulaja (this guy could definitely play in the NBA, very athletic!)) than they have done in Sydney. I just wish Detlef Schrempf could come back - a German team with PG Demirel/Bogojevic, SG Pesic/Rödl, SF Schrempf/Okulaja, PF Nowitzki, C Bradley/Femerling could beat ANYONE if they have a very good day. If the US goes into those games with an arrogant mentality, they will lose.

    Times are changing :).

I can not believe you just said that. Jugoslavija is WAY I MEAN WAY NETTER then Germany. The talent levels on each team are not even close and that is withouth 4 NBa players(Divac,Radmanovic,Rebraca(ROTY canidate) and Varda) that will play next year in the World Champions in the US. Germany has what one player who is Dirk is good the rest(maybe except Okulaja) are talentless bench warmers compared to Jugoslavija's team. I mean just look at what Bradley has done today what 3 pionts. The Germans where very fortunate that Jugoslavija did ply there usaul game in the third and Germasny come back otherwise we would have beat you by 25+ instead of only 13.

I did say that Yugoslavia has more depth than Germany. However, I still think that Germany will beat them later in the tournament because of Nowitzki. Yugoslavia has a great team with many good players and on average their players are clearly better than the German ones, but they will not have an answer for Dirk if he comes with his best game. It is comparable to Shaq playing with 2 decent players and the rest a bunch of CBA type players like Moochie, Matt Maloney etc. against a team with one good player (Stojakovic) and the rest just decent players like Lorenzen Wright, Doleac, Charlie Ward etc... I think that both sides can win, but when it counts, the team with the most dominant player will win.

Oh, and Shawn Bradley's three-pointer was hilarious...almost as funny as the airball he launched with his next 3-point attempt...I guess he suddenly thought he was Matt Bullard or something :D.

Thanks...coming back from a 22-point deficit and after being down 0-15 was definitely sweet...but I felt kind of sorry for the poor guy from Greece who missed 5 free throws in the last 2 minutes...they kept fouling that same guy and he was almost crying already! And then they lost by exactly 5 points difference... Nowitzki and Okulaja showed great heart and fighting spirit, it was fun to watch!

Come on now you are telling me that Stojakovic is the only good player on that team. That just shows that you know little about European basketball Stojakovic is not even the best player on the Jugoslavija.

Did you see the fight between Greece and Bosnia (don´t remember is correctly)? That was fun. They would have suspended almost all of the players in the NBA, but the complete Greece team was allowed to play in the great loss to Germany.

Germany really have a nice team. I hope they can edge France...

I wonder if they really speak German in the locker room ;)

I think that Stojakovic is the only great player on that team. Bodiroga is almost as good, Obradovic, Drobnjak and Jaric are decent. The rest, including Tarlac, is just alright, but not anywhere near being outstanding.

On the German team, Nowitzki is outstanding, fantastic. Okulaja and Bradley are good. Demirel, Pesic, Femerling are decent. The rest is so-so.

As I said, I think that if they get to play again, Germany will win if Nowitzki asserts himself and doesn't get into huge foul trouble.

You see if you have watched Jugoslavija play you would know that Bodiroga is the best all round player on the team.

BTW how can you even say that Bradley and Okulaja are better then Obardovic,Tomasevic, Jaric,Drobnjak and even Tarlac, because those players are way better then Bradley and Okulaja.

Then you look at the rest of the Jugoslavijan team they are still better the German left overs

You think you know European basketball but if you did you know that Germany does not come close to Jugoslavia. Jugoslavija is the best team Europe for the last ten it is not even close.

I really liked Bodiroga's play, but has he shown he can do it on a consistent basis? If he is better than Stojakovic, why is he not in the NBA?

Because for starters his making alot of money(highest payed player in Europe) to be a star and a starter for his team if he came to the NBA will teams offer the same amount of money and be a starter? Another reason is that he is playing close to home and also plays half as many games as NBA players. Other then that I do not know why. Divac was quoted by the Kings(Bodiroga was drafted by the Kings in 95 and stills holds his rights)as saying that it is unlikely that he will go to the NBa but who know. I hope he makes up his mind fast because he is getting older and I do not want him to come to the NBA to late

Okay, Germany is in the semifinals - just beat France 81-77 in the quarterfinals - Nowitzki was doing it all...threes, slam dunks, 32 points, even great on defense. Now against Turkey in the semis...I expect a final against Yugoslavia. That will be interesting...

A sidenote, I really think Okulaja could play in the NBA - that guy is pure hustle, he is a bit like Shandon Anderson (good defender), but with more fire and toughness.

If only Dirk can give Pedja the pictures because then maybe he can scare him because Dirk's play has definitly not had any effect.
