When my credit card statement shows a higher charge than my restaurant receipt? If it's not an honest mistake, who's at fault?
Is there anything that would make it seem to be an innocent mistake? How much of a difference are we talking?
Sounds like the server added a bit to their tip. I hope you have your copy of the receipt. I've had this happen twice. Once at a supercuts and once at a restaurant. I paid with a credit card and crossed out the line that says 'tip', because i left a cash tip. The b*stard there edited my cc receipt and wrote in a tip for themselves. Both times my credit card company reimbursed me. It really pissed me off though that some people had the gall to do that. It's theft.
some restaurants will charge you a little extra for something like an "advance charge" because you used a credit card... can't remember the exact reason, but basically, check the statement again in a few days. it should go back to the original amount.
No they didn't require that. I think because the overcharges were pretty small. (5 bucks and 8 bucks). But having kept them made me feel alot more sure that I would get the proper resolution.
This happened to me all the time back in my bar hopping days. Just give it a week and it should go back down. If not, call the CC company.
Based on experience (owning a sports bar) we get charge backs on occasion. we get them for all kinds of reasons. Bottom line is that it's the responsiblity of the establishment to show proof of the reciept, that it's a signed reciept, also that the card was actually there, either by swipe or by an imprint. Once you report it to the CC company they contact us and we have to send them the info. That's why we keep all of our cc receipts in boxes just in case some dumbutt gets too drunk and says i didn't go there or pay for that. It's happened to many times. One one occasion we had the same guy leave his credit card there with 200 dollar tabs and call in and say he lost his card and wasn't here. Both times we faxed in his CC reciept and the actual copy of the card that it was here and they didn't take the money from us and he had to pay it. You will be surprised on how many people take the wrong copy of the reciept (the signed one) from there they call in and say they weren't here and don't know why they were charged and we don't have a copy to prove that they really did. There are definently some scumbags out there. You can have an honest mistake where they add an extra 0 or something at the end but to be off completly is basically theft. It's good to have your reciept just to prove it beyond doubt but it's always the stores responsiblity to prove they charged you correctly. Once they send it in you can always requyest to see a copy so you can match signatures and stuff....
Hey Stack, One thing I normally do is take the Merchant copy instead of the Customer copy, if the Merchant copy happens to have my entire CC# and expiration date on it. Sometimes both copies are 'asterisked' out and I don't care which one I take. It still shows up on my CC bill so I'm assuming it's not hurting anyone. And it's just a precaution I take because I have no idea what you guys do with the receipts afterwards. I don't want just any person to have my CC# on a little slip of paper.
at a place here in la i was treated horribly by a waitress. After we sat down we literally had to get our own menus, flag down the busboy to place our orders and go to the bars ourselves to get a drink. The worst part of this was that our waitress was serving the party of 8 behind us and was constantly walking by my friends and i and not paying attention. we tried to get her attention several times and she kept saying that she would be right there. so she knew that we were her table. needless to say we left a quarter as a tip on cc bill. a week later i checked my statement and there was the bill, 10 dollars more than it should have been. i called my bank and they took care of everything. my bank called me with the number of the manager of the establishment and i called him and he refunded me the entire amount and was given a 100 dollar gift card to the place for my troubles
You guys must be terribly anal about that stuff. I keep my receipts for big purchases, but if a restaurant receipt is $5 more than what I thought, I don't really care. Just as often, I see them forgetting to add the tip and I save that money. I get it if it is $20 or $30.
I care, but not enough where it would make me save every single receipt for every single charge I make. that would just be a hassle
yeah, that might be true. so I guess I don't really care that much in reality =P but in principle I do, it's BS to get overcharged even just a few dollars
"If you were living on Social Security you would be keeping every receipt!"-Per Yetti I plan to begin drawing my social security benefits in 22 years and 8 mos provided it still exists. Believe me - when I do my barhopping I will save my reciepts. La Fonda San Miguel - a mexican restaurant near Hancock lane several years ago charged my tab twice. It was an American Express card-they took care of the overcharge and I did not have to pay. I think this was an isolated incident-reflects badly on La Fonda San Miguel only.
Honestly it doesn't make a difference to us as long as we have a signature at the bottom of either reciept. They shouldn't be printing your whole credit card number on the reciept anyways. Just to let you know all the new dining systems have your credit card info in one form or another in their database for backup purposes so if someone really wanted to get the info they could by doing some reports. That's very unlikely of course, unless someone is really crooked. As far as what we do with the reciepts, since we are a bar we are supposed to have copies of all our reciepts for a few years backed up if they want to audit us. But generally they will always store the receipts with the nights register end of day receipts just in case there is a charge back or a dispute so we have a copy for legal purposes. That's all they ever keep them for.
I work at a chain restaurant and if a server tries to pull that garbage and gets caught, it's an automatic termination. No second chances for that sort of BS...
It's the principal, theft is theft and no one likes being ripped off, whether it's for $100 or $1. That's why some are anal, especially when comes to CC matters. As for me, I haven't really kept up with this because keeping receipts is a pain in the butt, but am going to now. I'll just make a note in my PDA whenever I charge at restaurants.
