Being "clutch" refers to being able to perform well in tense critical situations.

The story is this: years ago, we had a football team called the Houston Oilers. It was a perennial playoff loser...but one particular year, we went to the playoffs, and had one of our great rivals - the Buffalo bills down by a score of 35-3 early in the second half. We somehow ended up losing the game - game which was labeled - the greatest choke in sports history. Due to our lack of championships and past failures - Houston became known as "Choke City".

Whenever the Rockets lost a lead, or any of our teams did poorly - it was said, "what do you expect from Choke City". It was a really humbling time to be a Rockets fan.

Then game 1994 and 1995. We won back to back championships. But what was really amazing, is that we won 7 or 8 games in a row while facing elimination during that run. Being down 2-0 to Phoenix after losing the first two games at home (once again having us called choke city)...down 2-1 to the utah jazz, 3-2 to the NY Knicks, down 3-2 to the clippers, and down 3-1 to the phoenix suns the following year. Many time, everyone counted the team for dead...but they just kept on coming back and finding a way to survive...and then win. Last second heroics (Mario Elie's kiss of death, Hakeem's block of John Starks, combined with many big shots by Robert Horry) eventually led to the team being called clutch, and the Houston Rockets amazing ability to win when seeming all was lost giving the city a new name, "Clutch City"

Therego - this bbs was known as Clutch City until recently changing it's name to Clutch Fans upon request of the Houston Rockets.

thank u very much! what u post reminds me of many rox games i watched between 1994-1996, clyde drexler, hakeem olajuwon(dream), and the great coach rudy tomjanovichyeah! it seemed rockets would occasionally have embarrassed moment in many games, but rox won those games finally though with a 20pts(even more) gap in the 1st half or early period...i got a strange feeling at that time, how can rox make that? that's really impressed me 12 years ago!

also i remember the great moment in 1995, rox swept off orlando magics when shaq was very young and inexperienced...i watched all the 4 games...many rox fans holding broom/whisk...tell u guys honestly, i was just a nba fan but not a rox fan, now——i am 1ofus, a 100% rox fan for 5 years! someday rox gonna hold the crown again, no doubt.

i am looking forward to the battle between mavs and spurs(w7 vs w4)...i am sure that will be a very very hot game! both teams will have a tough time! and also that is important to rox, if we know the "enemies" thoroughly, then we will defeat them completely...

    thanks again! NewYorker!
