    Weird thread, I know.

Is there any sort of procedure for evaluating the effects of a medicine (shot, to be specific) on an animal before giving it?

I'm asking because I'm wondering if this is just impossible, or if my friend ran into a sh**ty vet.

I'm just curious if it is just hit or miss/luck when it comes to these things. I have no idea.

    Not sure what you mean.
Explain the situation, what med and what happened.

I am not a vet but medications for humans are nearly the same.

My gf's mom took their new puppy to the vet. Vet said pup had a bronchial infection and gave it a shot (pencillin of some kind?). On the way home, pup threw up. As they got home, pup was having problems breathing.

The mom took it back to the vet; they tried to recover but the pup died. Vet said something about too much buildup in the lungs, but clearly the shot had something to do with it.

It's sad, too, because my gf's family lost their dog about a month ago - had it for about 15 years. The girls got together and bought a new puppy for an early Christmas gift. Now it up and dies after about three weeks. Out of nowhere, for the most part. Her and her family are taking it pretty hard. :(

What was the timing of the whole event? (i.e. what was the time lapse between getting the shot and when the dog had trouble breathing?)

If the timing was short, this was most likely an allergic reaction (which does cause fluid in the lungs)
If the timing was longer, it could be an overwhelming infection

This would be my guess (im a physician, not a vet though)

Rather quick, I believe. Took her to the vet, got the shot, brought her home (threw up on the way), saw that she was having trouble breathing, went back to the van and drove back to the vet.

    Probably within an hour total.
