I've been eating here for about 2yrs now and wanted to recommend this place to y'all. Haven't been in awhile, but went today, and as always, it was awesome. Anyway, the place is called Sinh Sinh. It's on Bellaire and 8. I've eaten at a lot places around town, and this place is better than all of them.
Coma, Try Ocean Palace on Bellaire. I don't remember the exact cross street, but it is on Bellaire west of Wilcrest. Ocean Palace can not be missed; it is huge, and it has a large coy fish pond in the front. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the dim sum. Dim sum is served on the weekdays or weekends.
TedRuxpin, Yes I'll have to try that place out. I haven't had decent dim sum since Chicago. ..and that was over 10yrs ago!!
As for Japanese, I recommend Ginza. Ginza is located on San Felipe @ Fountainview...on the north side of san felipe@....next to the burger place. This place has the freshest seafood ingredients for sushi. I would rank it up there with the places in LA and Manhattan. The downside is..it is a small sushi bar, so you may have to wait for a table if they are busy
I second Ginza. The food is great (but NYC is better for sushi, IMO). I also recommend a place called Kobe near Bunker Hill and I-10. As for Chinese food, you can't go wrong with Kim Son...
Go Timmy Chan's!!! Gotta love the GIANT "medium sized fried rice" which is enough for 3 days thanks for the tip coma -- I will visit there soon, as I work down the road
Aw man, Vengeance... Timmy Chan is the mecca of stuff-your-face Chinese restaurants. For under $6 they stuff about as much whatever-they-have into those styrofoam containers. I swear those things are 2 or 3 meals in one.
Mai's - BLEH! BLEH! BLEH! I think spolied milk tastes better than the food at Mai's. I went there one night after an Astros game, and after about 20m driving around looking for a place to park, I ordered a chicken plate and it tasted like rawhide. Kim Son - No way. The food at Kim Son is way too "Westernized." Not to mention the fact that it sucks. I used to eat at Kim Son on Westheimer weekly, then a few years ago, they must've changed chefs or something, because their food sucks now. Ginza - I gotta try this place. I've only been to Miyako's. It's decent, but it's pretty expensive. Korean food - Korea Garden Restaurant on Longpoint. I've been there about 4 times, I really like the BBQ there. It's one of those setups where they give you the marinated meat, and you grill it yourself at the table. Longpoint must be our version of LA's KTown. Never heard of Tu Hua or Timmy Chans. I vaguely remember a Timmy Chan's on 90 on the way to the dome though. Here's one place to NEVER, EVER go. Vietnam Coast on Hillcroft and Unity. I ordered a glass of Iced Tea and it came with it's very own ball of dust sitting at the bottom. Vengeance, ya gotta try the Com Bo Luc Lac at Sinh Sinh. It's steak tips with french fried rice. This rice is simply the best rice on Earth. congratulations on the new job btw.
For vegetarian stuff, I highly recommend both Wonderful Vegetarian and Quan Yin. They both have tremendous food whether you are a vegetarian or not. Wonderful has the best eggrolls ever.
coma, Sinh Sinh is the one across the street from "Welcome Food" center right? Yeah, that place have some good food. The "Com Bo Luc Lac" you mentioned IS GOOD, but I actually prefer the one with macaroni instead of the rice. Got to agree with you on Kim Son, their food is average at best. As far as Ocean Palace, I've been there 3 times and all 3 times I had to wait more than 1/2 hour before I got my first dish. Sorry, but the food wasn't that great to wait 1/2 hour for. Some of the dishes there aren't bad, but not head & shoulder above the competition and they are not cheap (price wise). If anyone like spicy beef, you got to try Orange Beef at New Golden Palace, it's the BEST in town, PERIOD! Trust me on this one, I've tried it at all the popular restaurants in town, they make it the best. It's located on Bellaire somewhere btw 59 & Gessner. Oh, don't order the Hot & Sour soup there, it's probably the worst in town. ======== Jeff, I was at Wonderful Vegetarian last weekend for lunch. I haven't been there for quite a while and was hesitant when I realize they changed ownership, when did that occured? It seems that the business has gotten better with the new owner. I had the buffet and was a bit dissappointed: 1) the noodle didn't taste as good as before. 2) there were no dish with wrapped seaweed. 3) their soups kind of suck. 4) NO SOYBEAN at the line. You thought their eggrolls are the best? They taste no different than the ones from any ordinary Chinese fast food place. Did you had the ones from the buffet line or were they special ordered? Maybe since you are their regular customer, they brought out the "GOOD" ones. Where is Quan Yin located?
How about AUSTIN? We cannot find any good Chinese here. Austin is way behind Houston for food. The best Chinese I ever had (including New York and San Francisco) was in Vegas and they closed this year!
Quan Yin is out on Bellaire past Highway 6. I agree that Wonderful is not as good as it used to be. They got rid of my favorite dish of all time - barbeque "ham".
Wow, coma, you don't like Mai's! My fiance and I go there quite often. We like it, but we are total novices when it comes to Asian food, you know what it's SUPPOSED to look like, smell like, taste like, etc.. I guess we'll have to try some of the other places mentioned (we both LOVE Asian food). Ginza is literally around the corner from us! (BTW, don't ever order from Cliff's, it's terrible, go to Whataburger) Good thread!
Moonbus, I was only suggeting to eat at Ocean Palace for Dim Sum. True the wait is long, but try to tell me a better place in Houston for Dim Sum. You can avoid the wait if you go on the weekdays or before noon on the weekends.
