I agree. Padgett seems to have moments of brilliance, then long stretches of average performance at best. And it doesn't seem as if Yao/Padgett are making the best +/- combination....hard to tell, though.

And you are right, popcornmachine's gameflow pages don't provide text-based +/- stats for 5-man match-ups. For further analyses, you sure want them in some tabulated forms. There are a couple of suggestions I'd like to bring up, if you don't mind. First, while you eliminated the horizontal spacing problem, by moving opposing players' names into a separate row underneath our players' names, you somehow introduce a vertical spacing problem. Vertical scrolling is nowhere nearly as inconvenient as horizontal scrolling, but wouldn't we wish there were no or barely any scrolling at all? Simply put, we want the maximum information output in that limited code window. I have reasons for using seemingly obscure abbreviated player names which some people may not like at first glance. That's the only way to minimize vertical scrolling. You see almost 95% of +/- entries in this table, compared to barely over 50% of those in the 2-row per matchup format. The artificially introduced individual player matchups in the vertically aligned presentation may be true for some (or even most) "pairs", they are not really the intended purpose for analysis like this, and therefore, may give false impressions. Since the one letter "code" for players on the same team must be unique, some will have to be assigned with the initials of their first names instead of last names. For instance, "J" for Howard, "T" for McGrady. I maintain that these one-letters are straightforward to understand for fans of the Rockets team, and after being exposed to them a couple of times, viewers will be able to link to the full names effortlessly by instinct (I know I can). What about opposing players? Well, to hell with opposing players! OK, I am kidding. But if you think about it, we get to play against each inter-conference team twice, and each intra-conference team no more than 4 times, out of 82 games in a regular season. So in other words, there is no need to memoralize them by heart. The single-letter format is very flexible. With some simple Excel spreadsheet manipulations, they can be expanded to the full-name format. One important bonus for the abbreviated version is that you can easily produce filtered data using the five-letter units as the keys. I will not comment on this besides to say if you are gonna pull one game out of your rump where Juwan goes +2 with Yao in a season where Yao has been playing like an MVP and try to prove your point after watching the last couple of years of play and observing that Juwan had the worst +/- numbers in combination of any player that played any substantial minutes alongside while ALL the other players that played alongside had positive +/- numbers..........................well just draw that conclusion. But it is absurd. You pick out one game where McGrady does a solo job on the opponent for 5 minutes and Juwan happens to be standing around on the floor when that happens to attempt to prove that Juwan "might not necessarily be a bad thing" when he plays alongside Yao????? Naw, it ain't bad. It's.........................TERRIBLE!!!!!

For my part, I like the 2 rows. It allows me to look at the matchups easier. I can always use my roller mouse to scroll down, that's not that big a deal to me. But I like seeing the position matchups at a glance with the rows each teams players on separate rows matched up with the opponent.

Just by watching the game, I know Shane Battier and Chuck Hayes are very important to the Rockets. Now we have the number to back it up. Nice job, durvasa. I would much rather JVG play Novak and VSpan more than play Juwan Howard at all.
Durvasa's work is always appreciated. I only wish the Alston sucks/Gundy sucks/Yao is not aggressive people could understand it. I appreciate any metrics that uncover the importance of Battier. His NBA stats are quite bland, yet his work on the court is key to our 6-3 record. Durvasa: are you still doing defense +/-? (things like TOs forced, shooting % defense) This was my favorite part of your stats reporting, as it gives me a lot of information that is difficult to gather from other places. Well, can't wait to see what the numbers look like for this Detroit game. Rafer was -11 in the Chicago game. I am betting this game is similar, perhaps worse. I guess we can look on the postive side. A few more like this and JVG will have to give VSpan some minutes, won't he?
Doubt it. If he does, it will be a big surprise. Last year, Juwon Howard and Ryan Bowen kept sucking big ones all season while Hayes kept rotting on the bench. Add to it that JVG never wanted VSpan here in the first place, his ego will get in the way. Playing Billy a lot of minutes would mean accepting defeat about his decision, and JVG has too big a head to do that. It's time for him to change. It will be better for everyone INCLUDING him.

All substitutions info are make by myself manually,maybe it's not 100% correct. Where can we find the substitutions info directly? Some people said that JVG is a very mechanical coach.I think substitutions info can prove it is right or wrong.
from those stats, it looks like Snyder was the best defender against Rip. he should have started or player more.
Yup. And all I needed was to look at the game on my laptop on a 6X4 inch. JVG was at floor level in the arena and he could not see that! I was screaming on the game board that Snyder should be guarding Rip. Snyder is more physical so he bothers the weaker guards. Snyder has the potential to be a Ron Artest mini. Similar built and bull like mentality. Added bonus he is young so he will be get better with playing time.
