For some reason, all I have been listening to of late is songs by George Jones. Everything he has done is great but my favorites are "Why Baby Why", "She Thinks I Still Care", "The Door", "Who's Going to Fill Their Shoes", "The Window Up Above", and of course, "He Stopped Loving Her Today".

So, I guess it is safe to say that George Jones is my favorite country music artist. I'm not really into country music much but if I got into it, I could see myself liking more of the old-school stuff like Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, and Willie Nelson.

Who is/are your favorite country music artists?

Johnny Cash - Greatest country artist ever, period, end of discussion

George Strait - Ages like fine wine. He never succumbed to the neo-country pop music crap that has surfaced in the past decade. The best country ballad singer ever, IMO

Garth Brooks - In his prime, he could hang with any of the legends

Dixie Chicks - Bash their political views all you want, but all three of their major country releases (not the recent pop album) are excellent. They also put on a pretty good concert.

Brooks and Dunn, Toby Keith, Hank Williams, Jr, and David Allen Coe are also pretty good...

and lest we forget the ladies - dolly parton (ever heard coat of many colors?), patsy cline, loretta lynn.

george strait wouldnt necessarily be in my faves, but i have grown to appreciate him over the years. imo, he is the last TRUE country singer.

EDIT: forgot gram parsons - solo stuff and his one album w/ the byrds, sweetheart of the rodeo. love that record.

I don't listen to the stuff that comes on the radio these days. I do listen to alot of Willie, Waylon, Cash, Kristoferson, Merle, Charlie Daniels, Steve Earle and others of that era. However, I mainly listen to the guys that are all over the Texas and Oklahoma scene; Jason Boland, Stoney LaRue, Eli Young Band, Brandon Rhyder, Wade Bowen, Brandon Jenkins, Jack Ingram, Randy Rogers, Phil Pritchet, Roger Creager, Bruce and Charlie Robison, Owen Temple, Aaron Watson, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Kevin Fowler, Reckless Kelly, Micky and the Motorcars. I'm sure there are a few others. Some of it is not really what most people would consider country, more southern rock I guess, although it is kinda hard to pinpoint a genre to associate them with. Most people would call it Texas Music or Red Dirt Music. Take a listen to any of them there are some real good bands out there.

Pretty much what I grew up with. Toss in some Don Williams (most under-rated country artist ever?), George Jones, Charlie Pride, Vince Gill/Pure Prairie League, Ernest Tubb, Lefty Frizzell, CDB (the album Fire on the Mountain will change the way you look at Charlie Daniels, awesome combo of country/southern rock/blues), and a ton of old country gospel, western swing & bluegrass when I was around the grandfolks.

You're right on about Strait being the last one. The crap pushed out of Nashville's arse these days is a joke.

There's a ton of very good Texas country & rockabilly and you named a bunch of 'em. Check out The Hollisters if you get a chance (I think they're together again). "Land of Rhythm & Pleasure" from the mid-90's might be the best album to come out of Houston in 20 years (sorry Jeff ;)).

I'd put Flatlanders' More a Legend Than a Band up against any album of any genre, ever.

No idea what you mean

I had one of his CD's, but gave it to my sister. She likes the pop/country music (which I can't stand)

He was a good guy in high school.
