Since we outlawed Corporal Punishment in the schools
    and
basically Made it so tha one is a Social Pariah if they spank their kids
    in public

Are our Kids better for it?

It seems their are more Violent Kids than ever

If one says their are other factors
. . .does that not work for corporal Punishment as well

I mean . .if the other Factors are the reason for the Violence
If that is the case. . . . then one would be saying Corporal punishment
did not matter one way or the other

    So Where do you Stand?
    What are your thoughts?

I think how the parent disiplines a child is not nearly as important as the relationship the parents have with each other. I think this plays as big a role as the direct one between parent and child. Pay enough attention to your child that you know when to punish them, let them know you love them and as long as your punishment isn't abuse, it don't matter.

Is this just a feeling you have?

Violent crime rates have been going down steadily since 1994, and have reached their lowest level ever in 2005.

Violent crime might be going down, and I wouldn't call kids today more violent per se...but kids are way different today.

There needs to be an attitude shift in American children.

I don't think the end of corporal punishment has made kids better or worse overall. When I was in elementary school there was still paddling but there was also still tardiness, misbehavior and fights. I don't deal with kids much now but from what I've seen I haven't heard of schools becoming completely anarchic.

I'm 6'1", 265 lbs and I routinely beat the crap out of my 4 and 8 YO daughters at the slightest provocation. Mostly I do it because I remember a sadistic principal who would paddle you for the most innocent offenses. He'd make you bend over and look at a plant. After about 5 whacks he would ask, "Did the plant move?" If you said "No," you'd get another whack. He'd then ask again. If you said "Yes," he'd say, "Plants don't move," and you'd get another whack. This went on until he got tired. One day, he beat a kid so bad the kid had bruises from his lower thighs up to his lower back and couldn't sit down. It's this principal's (because the "principal" is our "pal") inspiration that taught me how to be a man and raise kids. (That and few James Dobson books.)

I don't think kids are necessarily better. But I don't know that bringing back corporal punishment would change that.

I know parents who do spank, and parents that don't. I think it can be successful either way.

Other than being able to carry more music with them at any given time, I haven't noticed a whole lot of difference between my now-teen kids and me when I was that age.

Well, actually, my kids are better behaved than I was.

In my personal observation (totally subjective), there are kids who respond really well to spanking. Others respond better to other forms of discipline. Not using corporal punishment does a dis-service to those who do respond well to it.

I agree, I'll also add that one needs to make sure they're setting a solid behavioral example for the child to follow. Otherwise, to the child, spanking seems less about correcting bad behavior than about just expressing anger, and being justified to do so because you're the parent.

I'll also submit that if we get to a point where almost all parents don't spank their kids (I don't think that's true in the South, Midwest, or in immigrant families like mine was), then the stubborn few who continue to do so probably risk alienating their own children, they may consider themselves mistreated, misunderstood or unnecessarily see themselves as bad kids.

Also, I think if you're able to condition positive behavior in your child without physical contact, yelling or other confrontational means, it's probably a sign, and harbinger, of enhanced communication skills.

I don't spank my boy, and I have no intentions of every doing so.

But every kid is different. I disagree with spanking theoretically, but I also understand that every kid and every parent is different. Each situation is completely unique and requires different approaches.

Spanking should never be used in place of reason and logic -- nor used violently or without careful, level-headed patience -- but I see how many parents would use spanking as a major discipline tool.

There have always been terd kids and there will always be terd kids, regardless of spanking policies. Kids who are spanked can be idiots and kids who aren't spanked can be idiots. Each situation is completely unique.

There's a reason the same kids kept getting popped over and over again. I got popped about once a school year (should have been about four or five times, but I was a good ass kisser :D), and I didn't fear the pop at school nearly as much as the ass whooping I got when I got home. Parents always seem to blame the schools for their lack of parenting skills. Popping kids really doesn't do any good, because most parents think that their kid is the second coming of Jesus Christ and can't do anything wrong.
