Just saw Curry going 2-11 My question is how are the NBA all defensive teams selected?? and does Yao have a chance?? If he does, what does he have to do to get selected??
nope. I mean, he's solid, but it's all about reputation. I think defensive team is voted by the media, and we know what they think.
If he keeps playing like that, especially against the more prominent teams and "perceived better centers." He'll win it. If he keeps this up over the next 5-7 games, based on who we are playing He will turn some heads.
i think in order to improve his chances of being selected all defensive team, he needs to increase his rebounds to a consistent 10+ (and he will, look at tonight's 17, yikes!) and limit some TOs
the team is selected by a vote from a bunch of sports writers, analysts, and experts, etc... does he have a chance? well right now he is averaging 9.1 rebs and 2.3 blks (after the knick game). there are at least 6 players who are averaging more rebounds and blocks than him (KG, okafor, dright, camby, dalembert, marion). ben will be up there by the end of the season. usually duncan too. he will really have to make a statement by dominating rebounds and or blocks. maybe both. i doubt he ever makes an all-defensive team. however, he will be a shoe in for all-nba 1.
Yao was recieving alot of help defense tonight and along with playing a zone which was conducive to not getting him into early foul trouble. Most of his swats were with another defender coming over and giving curry trouble. This is a great strategy to keep yao in the game for longer periods of time.
Damn if the Dallas game were in the same calendar week as NY game (they are both within the same 7-day period though), Yao would be a serious candidate for his 1st WC POW this season. OK it's not exactly relevant to the thread topic, but I can't help thinking about this. Note there is a "Race to the MVP" on NBA.com, Yao Ming's name is nowhere to be found, granted it was last updated on Nov 7, 2006.
Sad but true. Media judge players by hype, image and reputation, nothing else. Many people still think Yao doesn't DESERVE to be an All-Star. So forget about the All-Defensive Team pipedream.
Yao is going to have to keep having monster games like this for this team to win consistently because nobody else is capable of dominating right now. Mac has flashes where he looks ready but his game is not there yet. Yao looks like he's in mid-season form and just ridiculous on last night! I love it when he stays alert and plays well at the outset...it sets the tone for the balance of the night. If he continues to have a game like this every 4th or 5th night and then continue 25/9 the other nights, he'll get the national attention...not enough to make the all D-team but who cares if his play helps our team win anyway!
Sure but if the team will go well and he keeps being good on defence, he'll be noticed for sure right? Theoritical question: If the Rox would win the championship this year and he keeps palying like that should he make both offnsive and defensive teams and if they didn't place him there, wouldn't it be a huge embarassement for them? I think it's up to the results, they await to see if the Rox will do well this year, so he'll attract more attention in his game.
