From the great words of Run DMC, "I said you got to work hard to want to compete, It's like that, and that's the way it is".

And for Bonzi screwing himself out of the money, like Kurtis Blow said, "Well, these...are..the breaks!"

Wow, I still find it funny how easily some people are ready to jump all over JVG even when he's clearly right.

If the incident is as reported, Bonzi need to get over himself and join the team

Well I remember getting crap for calling Bonzi DAII in the preseason but I am not going to say I told you so because I think this thread is jumping to conclusions. I don't not wanting to go on a preseason road trip while you're trying to get back in shape and get ready for the season the behavior of a "cancer" as he has been described in the thread. I think we knew what we were getting with Bonzi, but he is in a contract year and even with greed as a motivator he will help the team down the road.

if bonzi likes being an nba player then he will get in shape and play well this season without causing any problems.

if he feels like playing hardball or screwing the team over by going to the media then he gets shelved for 2 years and the league forgets about him. no one is that dumb. he'll get his act together and we will be a great team.

Dirk and JT know Dallas's plays and have proven themselves to the coaches over several seasons. Bonzi needed time learning the Rockets plays and getting used to playing with his new teamates.

More than that, despite outward appearances JVG is actually pretty big on team-building. This is the guy who organizes team trips to Vegas and Astros games and the like. I'm pretty sure guys can get excused from these activities (Yao, specifically), but "no thanks" isn't going to wash as an excusable reason.

This being Bonzi's contract year is our main bargaining chip, and I have faith in the power of money. Next year's contract overrides everything.

Van Gundy's tough love approach will either hurt or help us. I'm hoping for the latter.

Sure, it'd be so nice to have him play significant minutes with our team, which I still think will happen, but I've been really impressed with Kirk Snyder. He's our most fearless penetrator, a decent rebounder, good defender, and even has a reliable jumpshot when open. You can tell he likes playing with us, too. He's the closest thing we've had to a Mario Elie in a while.

Where is Rick Adelman? I have never heard of Rick Adelman has problems with any playas or any playas not playing for him. Bring Rick in and give JVG some lectures on coach-playa relationship or playa psychology. It'll help.

    JVG is not the problem!!!!

It's the dude who turned down a better offer than he deserved. The dude who had to settle for an offer he didn't like. The dude who came in to camp fat. The dude who came in to camp with bad teeth that he couldn't schedule dental appointments around his job. The dude who thinks practice wasn't necessary. The dude who wouldn't go with his team. The dude with a 350lb chick on his leg in a club while supposedly on personal leave.

You know him, his name is Bonzi Wells not Jeff Van Gundy.

I think Bonzi is spending too much time trying to be a 'playa' and not enough time becoming a better 'player.'

BTW- what is the obsession with Adelman on this board? WTF?

Bonzi is a given when the Rockets signs him. If JVG thinks he cant handle him, he should say "pass".

And Rick Adelman do have a reputation of handling any playas. So, WTF if u dont know that.

As a long time fan of the Warrior's i can tell you that RIck Adelman had a huge problem with Tim Hardaway or rather Tim hated Adelman. Not only did Adelman limit Hardaway's mintues and role on the team, he started a horrid BJ armstrong AND then traded Hardaway for BIMBO COLES who was the worst point guard G.S would have for years.

In fact if i recall correctly Tim commented on more than one occasion that he was on the verge of attacking Adelman.

Anyways back to Bonzi. I think Jeff Van Gundy is doing the correct thing. He has to get Bonzi to believe and integrate himself to the team and to do so without the doubts, misgivings, bitterness and laziness. So he simply gave bonzi a simple choice to make, take some time to decide if he wants to commit fully to the Rockets or not.
Giving Bonzi that choice was not an act of maliciousness or power tripping or insensitivity but rather the simplest and most direct for both parties.

I believe Bonzi has made his choice and decided to commit to the team AND that he and JEFF are in fact on the same page now. So why is he not playing now? As any blind man can see, he is woefully out of shape at the moment and needs to make up the work of getting in shape, attitude, focus, that most players do in the offseason & preseason. Without putting in this type of work/effort JVG cannot really afford to play him, let alone take minutes away from Snyder, Head and the other guards/swings/forwards who have.

Bonzi will play and I believe he will play often as the season progress. It's a long season, him missing the first few weeks (5-8 games) will not really be all that important when hes back in shape playing well & often in December or January ect.

Aldridge had the "scoop", and there was some speculation that the premature leaking actually contributed to killing the deal.

Fortunately, the Rockets have enough pieces to not have to depend on Bonzi Wells this year. If he works out, super, but the team will go as far as McGrady and Yao's health. If they are healthy and playing well, there are enough solid players to do some damage. I think Van Gundy should be commended for demanding accountability.

Yep, and TO being an ass is Parcells's/Reid's fault too.

Come on, get a grip on yourself and think about what you're writing. Bonzi is a flake. JVG is totally justified in asking Bonzi to come along.

If Bonzi was in the dog house - he wouldn't get any playing time.

Let's face - he doesn't look good out there right now - which is why he's not getting a whole lot of PT.

I was thinking we could trade Bonzi to the Knicks for Crawford, but Bonzi is too good a player and too cheap for Isiah Thomas to be interested. ;)
