The curse of Scottie Pippen! Rice will be #41 which Griffin wanted because that was his brother that died's number in college, I think, so Griffin decided to be number 33 since Rice will be #41.

Maybe he can manage to make us have good associations with that number again. Before Pippen, it was Thorpe's number and that was a good association to have.

Yeah Thorpe was a good player but Pippen.....If Dream, Thorpe, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes, Rudy T, Griffen and Murph all had that number it still would be a bad number cause Quitten had it. NBA.com:
Glen Rice proudly displays the No. 41 jersey he will don for the Rockets this season. Rookie Eddie Griffin, who chose No. 41 after being traded to the Rockets, voluntarily gave the veteran Rice his number. Griffin will instead wear No. 33.

I must say that I resent the notion that Scottie Pippen had more of a negative impact on our Franchise than FREAKIN BIG OTIS THORPE did a positive one. Who ever thinks that can kiss my rear, dudes. I'm the first one to curse the day Pippen came here, and I hope Walt Williams dies of old age before the start of season, however NEVER would I ever call 33 a bad number. O.T. one armed dunks, and football passes are a permanent and salient piece of Rockets history and hopefully every one of your brians. Scottie Pippen playing great defense, whining about offense, and then asking for a trade doesn't even register on the Rockets meter in the shadow of Otis. Let's stop this silly post.

    rediculous.

Let's all hope Griiffen keeps #33 in it's dignified, and virtually untarnished place in Rockets history.

But then he would have to switch when we retire the jersey of our former center.

This shows you how much of a class act Griffin is upon joining the NBA. He obviously wants to shed that "bad boy" persona.

Once big Eddie wins rookie of the year everyone will forget about the Pippen curse.

Robert Reid had #33 before Thorpe. He originally had #50, but took a one year sabbatical the year Sampson was drafted. Sampson then took #50, so when Reid came back the next year, he chose #33. When Sampson was traded, Reid went back to #50, and then Thorpe came in and took #33.

I remember when Reid had to select a number other than 50 he chose 33 because he had played so well against Lary Bird in the 1980 NBA Championship Series.

Eddie will help make the number 33 a great number again. In 20 years it will hang from the rafters of the new arena.

Why did Griffin have to take a back seat to Rices' decision to wear #41?!
If he was here first, he should have had the first number he wanted?!

Anyhow, they better damn well win!

That's a bad idea. After donning the legendary #34 jersey, Griffin will exceed all expectations and become one of the city's greatest sports stars of all time. Oddly enough, though, he will not finish his long and distinguished career with Houston, joining such notable #34's as Earl Campbell, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Nolan Ryan.

I say keep #33. Scotty Quitten be damned.

It was Griffin's decision to give the number to Rice, not Griffin being forced to hand over his number.

Hey guys, in soccer, there's usually an alternative to this...

A certain Mr. Ivan Zamorano was always a number 9. But when The Phenomenon, Ronaldo, a.k.a. R9, joined his club, he had to switch. The number he switched to was 18. But the brilliance of this is that he put a little + sign between the 1 and the 8, so it reads 1+8 on his shirt.

Is this possible in the NBA?

    Sane,

Just a hunch here, but my guess is no. What number would Griffen then have to be ---- at forward, from Seton Hall, #2417, Eddie Griffin!

    24 + 17 = 41.........

That would look quite funny on the PJ's....

    :D

There is no tearing. Griffin could have just said take the number since you are the Vet, out of respect. Who Knows... I dont think Rudy or CD would let this happen unless Griffin was ok with it, just because of the reasons he stated for wanting that number.
