Okay, I'm gonna start this off by saying that I've only got to see one game this year, due to not living in Houston, and being busy. That's just a disclaimer.

The so called experts have been saying all along that a team run through Yao is the best team we can put out. Are they right?

    Let's see:

In the first game, Yao shot 12 shots - 3rd most on the team behind McGrady and Rafer. What was the end result? We played poorly, were outplayed and flat out beat. Granted, Utah is a decent team, but look at our next game...

During our next game, Yao led the offense, and easily had the most shot attemtps on the team. What was the end result? Yao had 36 points, and we absolutely routed one of the best teams in the league. We looked stellar. Not only did we score tons of points, but we also played glove-like defense, keeping one of the best shooting teams to 76 points.

Tonight, Yao only shoots 11 shots, fourth most on the team, which shouldn't happen at all, and look at the end result. Granted, it's not as easy as typing it out on a simple message board - there is foul trouble, fatigue, injuries, matchups, etc. to deal with, but from the looks of it (and I'll admit, this is a very small sample size), these "experts" seem to be on to something....

If this has been touched upon, I apologize.

Tonight they were looking for Yao. Yao had trouble pass out from double team quickly, and shooters had trouble making open shots in 4th quarter. Plus a bunch of TOs by everybody.

The Hornets had a double team on him most of the game. A guy in the back and a guy up front to deny the entry pass.

This left either T-mac, Alston, or Battier open for a 3 ptr (Hayes does not shoot 3s).

However, except for Battier, nobody get hit the 3, Battier was 5 for 11 from 3, Alston was 2 for 7, T-Mac, 0 for 3...

Don't know why JVG didn't put Novak in the game at all????

Yao was in foul trouble the first game and todays game. McGrady needs to step up when this happens.

Yao looked like he was really out of gas tonight. However, JVG should still played Yao though. Not playing your best player the entire 2nd quarter is just plain stupid.

Free throw shooting is another problem. Around 65% is not gonna get the job done. I cringe every time Tmac, snyder, and hayes goes to the free throw line. A tired Yao at the line is pretty bad, too. I noticed when Yao missed the first one, he tend to miss another consecutively.

Anyway, this is still a new team with a huge turnover. Our biggest problem right now is Tmac trying to defer to Yao and Yao trying to defer to T-mac. Like somebody with 2 heads heading the wrong way. We are lacking an identity.

No, you're just plain stupid. You don't play somebody in the second quarter when they picked up 3 FOULS IN THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES.

Yao isn't exactly deferring to T-Mac. He was just doubled up major tonight.

T-Mac is scared to shoot cause he's sucking and so he always passes to Yao or someone else.

I understand that there are reasons that we can't get the ball to Yao on every play. I said something about that in my original post.

What I'm saying is that Yao should be the focus of this offense. I know it's something that's been beaten like a dead horse around here, but if we're gonna win a championship, Yao needs at least 15 shots, but probably more around 20 a game. If we can do this, then I truly believe that Yao scores 30 to 35 points a game, and like, everyone's said all along, we would have to be on the short list of the favorites of the to win the title.

Now, when it comes to Yao being double teamed and all that, that's just a matter of switching up the offensive play sets. Yao has some athleticism and can consistently hit the 18 foot jumper, and I think we should utilize that a bit.

Our 2nd unit got us back in the 2nd without Yao. The speed of game is a liitle too fast for Yao, I am sure that's what Byron wanted. When Yao's out of rythm, he makes mistakes that just make you scratch your head.

you guys seemed to be over analyzing these games. just wait until we hit 10-15 games. then well really see how our teams developed. 3 games does not prove your heading to the finals.

Yao had three fouls. The announcers didn't realize it, but he did.

well we have to realize that if battier hits JUST ONE of the three 3 pointers he missed WIDE open at the end, we're in that game. so yeah.

I concur with DurV Yao had 3 fouls and it was a very smart move to not play him at all. The Rockets were struggling but still keeping it close enough and to bring so he picks up his fourth foul would have been stupid. So the poster who said JVG was stupid is stupid.

On a side note I thought JVG had another good game coaching. The Rockets didn't lose because of him. The Rockets lost because too many players celebrated the dallas victory last night in New Orleans and Tmac is still out of sync. I don't how long the Rockets can withstand Tmac's lousy play.

Gee I find myself questioning how Gundy coached a back to back by playing Rafer major minutes against one of the fastest PG's in the game when what might have helped was sending Billy out with orders to get right up in Paul's face and disrupt his game. Where was Novak all night? I complained about Gundy all last year - in back to backs esp. but anytime possible esp. against young fast teams put some fresh legs in whenever you can. He never does.

Gundy expects and believes in mind over matter - he expects dead legs to keep working. It is not physically possible.

I hope he can learn this valuable lesson sometime before he hits 60.

The only reason we have young legs now is because of Morey, and because Gundy lost most of his authority over personnel decisions.

Old tired Knicks did not get it done.

Actually I disagree with most of the "experts" claiming that everything must run through Yao first.

That's just inflexible basketball. True, Yao should always get a touch on offense as far as possible, true, Yao should be the first option, but the team has to be flexible enough to play however the defense plays them. If they're denying Yao the ball like the Hornets did today, then the 3-point shooters have to step up and hit shots off the pass-out and swing. If they're just gonna go with 1-on-1 coverage on Yao, then sure, keep dumping the ball to him.

This team has the potential to adjust on the fly on offense to how the defense plays the star players. Whether or not Van Gundy is flexible enough to make adjustments to the gameplan on the fly is another matter.
