According to the #2 Republican in the US House, Congressman John Boehner, the Iraq mess is all the fault of the US troops on the ground in Iraq. Boehner only moments ago had the following to say about who is to blame for Iraq:

So US generals aren't as patriotic as other US service members in Iraq? They haven't made the same sacrifice? They aren't risking their lives? They're not just as much heroes as everyone else, doing the best they can in an impossible situation?

Do Republican candidates around the country agree that the Iraq mess is the fault of US troops in Iraq?

Rumsfeld is a disaster but the generals running this war deserve plenty of criticism. If the generals aren't getting the troops they need then they should resign in protest. If they are getting the troops they've asked for then they should be taken to task for the mess we have in Iraq.

The Dems are defending their own, and the Repubs do the same.

This should be a fun week for the D&D...partisans are out in full force.

The problem in Iraq does indeed have to do with the troops. Only it's not because of their ineptitude; it's because we didn't send enough of them over there. The ones that are there are having to do way more than they should. It's not their fault at all.

Poor planning on behalf of those in the administration is at fault for the current state of things over there.

It's bad enough Boehner wants to place blame on the soldiers in the field. But Boehner has a very short memory. Remember, the whole Rummy cult that held Washington in its thrall only a few years ago was based on the idea that he didn't just take the stodgy generals' word for it. Their ideas were outmoded. And the men were stucke in their ways. It took Rummy to knock their heads together and tell them what was what.

So really, Rumsfeld is probably a lot more responsible for this disaster than almost any other Sec Def has been for anything else, because he's insisted on such a level of micromanagement and such a complete disregard for the professional advice of his generals.

But for John Boehner, don't forget the central mission: defend Rummy and the president at all costs. Don't cut and run.

And I’m sure we’ll see the outrage from this insult from the right. Right?

I mean a flubbed joke taken out of context is much more insulting and demeaning to our troops than blaming them for Iraq.

Doesn't the quote deflect as much of the blame from Rumsfled onto the president as it does onto the generals? Hardly defending the pres at all costs. In fact, it would probably help the GOP more to put all the blame on Rumsfeld and then get rid of him before the election.

Lemma to Corollary to Cliff Notes:

Bad: ""No Democrat will be bullied by an administration that has a cut and run policy in Afghanistan and a stand still and lose strategy in Iraq."

Good: ""However they put it, the Democrat approach in Iraq comes down to this: The terrorists win and America loses"
