I'm glad to see that Hoosiers is just barely in the lead. I watched this again over the weekend. It still gives me lumps in my throat and chills of admiration. Some conservative, huh?!

I've mentioned this before, but one of my youth coaches in Houston was one of those boys that played for Milan (Hickory) in the movie.

Does anybody remember Ronnie Truitt? He died 10-15 years ago. He won a state 4A title ('71 I think) at Cy Fair.

Actually I think the Sandlot should be on this poll for sure... even though you were probably kidding.... Okay it's a kids movie, but that movie just makes me happy about baseball in general...

It's so pure... like the way baseball's meant to be.... heh...

    Anyway....

    :)

An often overlooked sports film, if in fact billiards is to be considered a conventional sport, which I think it should, is "The Color of Money." Anyone familar with the world of big-time billiards knows that that film is acurate to a point on the state of billiards today, on what the hustler's life is like, on the nuances of 9-ball gambling, and on the differences between the old school versus the new school pool players. Remember the scene in which Newman and Cruise play for the first time. Newman expresses his discontent with the game of 9-ball as opposed to straight pool, saying 9-ball is for "Bangers" and that it is just good for television. Cruise in response says that even if it is just for "bangers" everyone is doing it, and if everyone is doing it that there must be a lot of people doing it, but that only one can be the best. In Fact, as pool movies go, it was much more acurate than "The Hustler" itself. The hustler glorified the pool player too much. The idea that Fats always kept himself in immaculate condition in terms of hygiene and that hustlers ran in exclusive circles, played millionaires, etc. It was as if the makers of that film wanted to portray billiards as a gentleman even courtly type of sport. The fact of the matter is billiard playing is dirty business, played by for the most part money hungery scum bags. Now I understand that some scenes suggested a seedier way of life, but at every point those scenes were contrasted with a ray of light to the better person. Newman's alchoholism with his against all odds defeat of Gleason finally, where even Gleason admitts that he can't beat Newman, suggesting that Newman finally overcomes his demons to become somebody.

I don't know about everyone else, but my favorite sports movie is Love and Basketball with Omar Epps and Sanna Lathan. Great for guys(I'm straight by the way) and girls.

I voted for Rocky, but it was real close.

What makes Rocky special is that it concentrates on characters, not sports. There are only two fight seens in the whole darn movie. The rest is character development. It was less about the man versus his opponent, than it was about the man verses himself. I still forget sometimes if he won or lost that last fight, but I guess that's the point.

The setting was brilliant. Nearly every frame of the film oozes Philadelphia, from Rocky's apartment to the Art Museum. I visited Philly a year ago, and all I could think about, strangely, was getting to the Rocky statue. That feeling. That Landmark. eerie. How many years has it been? And still, that feeling.

Strangely enough, the guy who directed Rocky directed the Karate Kid. Another film I really liked. Anyway, the film is gutwrenching and painful. Something wonderful about his character being stupid, booring, unfocused, brutish that made him likeable.

    I love the ESPN commercial:

"Pick me out a winner Bobby."
    "O K"

    The Natural all the way.

Personally I wanted to see Hoop Dreams on the actual poll.

But Hoosiers was a great movie as well.
