Is there anyway to speed up sharing? Everybody keeps telling me to forward my ports on my router but I don't have a router set up. I am using Azureus. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

I set mines to upload at 4/5 or 9/10 kbs. This way it doesn't LEECH all your uploading bandwidth which will bog your DL speeds.

This is the only way I know of speeding it up. This has worked fine for me so I never bothered researching any other methods.

I use azureus and opened up the ports on my router. I get download speeds ranging from 100 - 350 kbps, witht he average on a well seeded file at around 150.

Do you have dial-up or broadband?

If you don't have a router, how is your connection set up?

Is it wall--->modem--->computer, or phone jack--->modem card, or wall--->modem--->other computer--->ethernet hub----->your computer, or something else?

Port-forwarding aside, there are other ways to speed up your BT connection depending on your computer's connection and OS. Are you using Windows XP? If so, do you have Service Pack 2 installed? Is the firewall enabled? Is any firewall enabled?

Here is a link that thelped me a lot, you can look up your specific brand and type of router and get tailored step by step instructions for setting up a static IP and port forwarding.

With that setup, you don't need to worry about any ports unless you have a firewall. If (and only if) that is the case, go to Tools-->Options in Azureus. Under the "Connection" category, there's a field that says "Incoming TCP Listen Port" and another that says "UDP Listen Port". Put a random number in both of those (use the same number - e.g. 58205) and click "Save". I don't know what kind of firewall program you may or may not use, so you'll have to figure out how to always permit traffic through the port you chose from within your firewall software's settings. Another thing to check there is whether or not azureus.exe is listed as a firewall exception, as it should be. When you get that all figured out, use Azureus' "Configuration Wizard" under "Tools" to check your port.

But, as for a non-port-related tweak, Windows XP's "Service Pack 2" changed a connection setting in order to help prevent rapid spreading of worms from your computer out to the internet. It changed the global "Max Halfopen Connections" limit to 10. What this means is you can no longer establish more than 10 simultaneous half-open connections, and this is the type of connection bittorrent uses to communicate with peers. To change this value, click this link and save the file (NOTE: Don't do any of this if you don't have SP2 installed). Extract the file "EvID4226Patch.exe" and run it. It'll pop up with the command prompt window and ask if you really want to change the limit to 50. Just tell it "Y", and then "Y" again when it asks the next question. Windows will pop up asking to insert your install CD so it can revert that file to its original form, but press cancel. When you do that, it'll basically ask if you're sure (don't be scared, this is a safe tool), and you should tell it yes. The command prompt thing will have counted down from 15 and should then say "Press Any Key To Exit". You should now have a halfopen maximum of 50 connections. Now you need to tell Azureus about it. Under "Options" in Azureus, double-click "Connection" to expand the tree. There should be an "Advanced Network Settings" selection. The first field there is for "Max simultaneous outbound connection attempts" - set that to 50, save and reboot.
