from the Chronicle: The Rockets finalized the deal to bring Rice to Houston after being granted future considerations from both the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks, who also were part of last week's three-team trade. Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson wouldn't elaborate on what exactly the future considerations were, but sources confirm it's cash." Here is a concise definition of cash in the NBA. It's something that helps an owner without doing a damn thing, even capwise, for his team. In other words, it's something a rich owner can give to a less rich owner to buy his silence while the less rich owner's team remains ripped off. And the rich owner can do this again and again, as long as the less rich owner cares more about money than he cares about his team. If the Chronicle report proves true, this is a grim omen for our team's future.
I really don't have that big a problem w/ Les getting cash out of this deal. When you consider that there were more than likely no other offers to the Knicks for Rice, one could argue that it is commendable of Les to take on Rice's contract for the better of the team. Not many owners would pay $21M for a 34year old coming off an injury regardless of how well the coach/GM thinks the player will help them win NOW. Another thing is Les should be entitled to look after the profitabilty/bottom line of his business. We as fans cannot expect him to put burn his own money in order to get us a ring every decade.
Will, Fox sports reported about 30 minutes ago that the "future considerations" were one first round pick from one team and a second round pick + cash from another. My guess is Ny and Dallas respectively.
the CD quotes sounded very defensive on what future considerations are. Hopefully the other reports are right, and it was a 1st, 2nd, and cash. Maybe this cash will play into the Moochie deal, or a future deal. Let's wait out the offseason and see if the extra cash allows Les to be extra generous in picking up a player with a longer contract.
It seems likely that the 1st and 2nd round picks have been given and the cash element is no doubt $3million from Cuban! (his standard trade amount)
The only way that Les receiving cash could help the team is if the Rockets go over the salary cap and he uses the money on the luxury tax. I have absolutely no problem with that because I'm pretty sure money is not one of Les' primary concerns.
Nike, Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that the cash counts for or against the cap. I think it's just Les's weekend spending money. Where's Crispee & his handy dandy CBA book when you need him?
Les has been losing money for years, so I have no problem with him getting a little cash. Cuban has piles of cash so I doubt he minds giving some up. The picks sound promising.
Berman reports that it was pure cash, a $1M from both teams, and that no picks were exchanged. YEEHOO! We got some more picks!
Actually, I thought cash was usually used to pay off a part of a players contract when the team receiving the player is uncomfortable with the players contract. Besides I wouldn't say the Rockets were ripped off until we see what Glen Rice can do.
hottoddie, I don't think NIKE was remarking about the salary cap. re: the CBA, there is a clause that stipulates that trades with NY and Mark Cuban cannot consummate without asking them for extra money. CD clearly forgot this clause, and Les had to remind him.
Will, why do you assume that the money goes into Les' pocket? Obviously, Les is not personally involved in the trade, so the money cannot go into his pocket. It goes to the team. Of course, the team is his, but that does not mean that he directly receives money from the trade.
If it was 2 million that is being reported by "sources", then it is not a big concern of either Les or the team. Does anyone have any doubts now that Les and the team was telling Fegan that screwing with someone can work both ways. If Moochie wants to stay he will step in and sign, if not then he was a role player and can be replaced.
Det -- My point isn't that the money goes into his pocket. My point is that it doesn't come off our cap. It does help the Rockets organization (which he owns) financially. But it doesn't help us acquire an extra player if Rice's injury keeps him off the court. Players help. Draft picks help. Trade exceptions help. Cash doesn't help.
saleem said: Don't you guys get it? Les is for sure getting pocket money to spend. He is going to surprise us next season on opening day by buying us new uniforms!!!!!!
Yes, looking at it from that angle, it definitely sucks if we don't get anything else but cash. The idea with the conditional draft pick if Rice doesn't play a certain number of games would have been fair.
