I've watched all pre-season games that R2K kindly uploaded (thanks R2K) and
I was very disappointed in the way how T-Mac was playing. Here are some phrases which I would describe the T-Mac I saw in pre-season games

    Not Energetic
    Less Explosive
    Poor man's Mike Dunleavy 3 pt%
Poor man's Ben Wallace at the foul line
Poor man's David Robinson jump shot posture
A bit better than Yao's foot speed

What reasons caused this? Is he reserving all his energy for the regular season? Is he adjusting his shot after the injury? Is he just out of shape after 1/2 season without playing? I don't know, but I just hope this poor form is going to be over soon

    It's only preseason.

TMac is saving himself for when it actually counts.

T-Mac is a shooter & he's trying to shot his way back into shape. It's pre-season & he knows it. What better time to work your way back into playing shap than now?

No worries come Nov. 1st he will be ready to go!

Does this differ from his pre-season stats of the past?

I think it is just because its preseason or at least I hope it is. I have noticed that he is less explosive and not really into the game, its like he's just going through the motions. But, I think once the season starts, he'll turn it up.

I couldn't find many detailed records of preseason stats, but I was able to find some at http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/preSeasonStats?statId=0

They only keep stats for the top 10-30 players in each category. Tracy was in the top 10 in points scored the last 2 preseasons:

    2004-05 Preseason
    23.3 pts

    2005-06 Preseason
    24.7 pts

regardless of how explosive tmac is right now, he is still taking shots. you can't really try harder to shoot better, I mean he's obviously trying to score points. 2-13 from 3? right. tmac is still very valuable, he's a playmaker. but he's not the same, and I think we might have to get used to it.

He looked good to me the 1st game of preseason.

I remember thinking wow..he looks explosive and he was getting down low on defense and working hard.

But I agree the last 2 games Ive seen, seems like hes been in cruise control a bit.

I wouldnt be surprised if he busts out Nov 1

I think he's cruising right now and if you remember...he hasn't played competitive hoops since march (7 months) and he's rusty. Your legs affect your shot and shooting is about mechanics and timing and rhythm and he's going to have to get all of that back. If he says he's healthy than he's healthy and nobody should believe otherwise. I'm certain he doesn't want to push to hard in meaningless games...he's a proven scorer and guys like that can do it any day any time and he'll be fine once the games count. I expect him to get stronger each week.

With Bonzi, Battier, Yao and a new Rafer...Mac will not have to score 30 per night for us to win and we will win with him getting 18-20 and his usual 4-5 boards and 5-6 dimes per game. It's about winning not numbers for him now and I'm sure he'll adjust his game to Yao's and Bonzi's and Battier's so that the TEAM can be successful.

Sometimes I just don't understand this board. In one thread, after a Rockets win, "It's only preseason, nothing to get happy about", but in another thread when someone isn't playing well, "OMG, what is wrong with (McGrady, Yao, etc)?" in the same breathe. I don't get what this board wants to see sometime. What posters here fail to realize (or remember, whichever) about McGrady is that he essentially has not played for over half year. This was his 6th game back and people are complaining he isn't looking explosive in a preseason game. Then some people say they don't want players playing hard during the preseason. There are just numerous varying opinions here, which is fine but, it seems like many of the threads started are fire and brimstone (OMG, McGrady has become an average player based on the 6th Preseason game!?!) type threads. It's annoying to see so many of them.

    Still, love the BBS though.

Guys remember T-Mac once laughed at his NBA Live 07 strength statistics?
Seems he can never finishing strong around the basket....

That's what I was thinking. How could he look so good in the first preseason game and not be able to repeat. So I ask myself is he just saving himself for the real deal or maybe his body is just tired from practice. Because the last thing I want to think is he reinjured his back. But he did take a serious spill the other night and he was grimacing when he got up. I hope I mean big time hope that's not it but it can't be ruled out just yet.

It's not fire and brimstone when you watch 1 game and he looks explosive. ANd you watch another game and he isn't. That's reality and this a legitimate thread. Watch the opening game again and then watch how he played the last 2 games again and tell me you don't see a difference.

look, I'm just not trying to boast my post count or something. Its just that when I see Wade, Garnett and other All-stars playing like they are All-stars in preseason, but our T-mac just doesn't perform like an All-star at all, I just feel really upset about it. Nobody likes it.

What a true fan does is to worry about their favourite team when they are loosing and praising them when they are winning. I know holding a stance is important but this is just a way of expressing my miserableness

TMAC became a cap problem as of last year. Which is why I don;t really understand this win now idea. I think with Yao and GOOD players ( no need for another superstar) we could have a nice future. I don't know why they hated Gay so much.

But really the only win now thing they have done is not get Gay and really they could win now and still have a good future. But i think thats mostly luck in landing Wells.

After 2 or 3 weeks into the season and Tmac still looks like this, THEN I think we should be concerned.. Right now he's just getting himself ready for the season..

Bingo, this is T-Macs 10th preseason at a very young age of 27. He had a long layoff and it's going to take some time to get into his all-star rhythm, but at the age of 27 it shouldn't take long.
