Mellencamp missed his cue by a mile.. he's promoting his new album and he shows up LATE? What a jerk.. I heard boo's as they were leaving, serves em right.
I blame Fox... they're the only reason he's there. (Chevy is their biggest advertiser, his song is the staple of their ad campaign, he gets to go to the world series and peform for fox).
Anyone think Rogers should have been ejected for having a foreign substance on his hand? - in the post game press conference he said it was dirt- but it sure looked like pine tar to me- plus ESPN showed clips of him having the same 'clump of dirt' on the same part of his same hand in both his previous starts against the Yankees and the A's.
Why do you think LaRussa didn't press the issue? There's usually a rosin bag at the back of every mound. Powdered rosin + liquid (sweat) = pine tar. It's pretty common, and it's not that big a deal.
It basically allows the hands to stick to a foreign object and reduce moisture which is why they put them on bats. I guess its more effective than the rosin bag at drying your hands. Although some pitchers have said that having pine tar is actually fairly common in baseball.
I'm surpised no one on the Cardinals made a fuss over it. From what I've seen on tv today it seems like it was pretty easy to pick it out.
I can't tell...but nobody made a fuss about it except the media. I would think the umpires could tell the difference between pine tar and mud/rosin. In any case, it's entirely possible that the same spot on his hand was "dirty" in both pictures from the ALCS and the WS because he picks up the rosin bag the same way. Now what doesn't make sense is why the umpires told him to remove it but Rogers denied them every saying anything to him. But his stuff was damn good regardless of what that crap was.
Maybe he just forgot to wash his hands from his pregame meal and left a little chicken seasoning on there. Regardless of what it was, after the umps made the Roaster wash it off, he continued to dominate and only game up 2 hits over the next 7 innings without the pine tar.
