The previous thread shows that people do drink and drive, despite extremely aggressive laws against it.

Scientific research shows that your body metabolizes 1 drink per hour.

Given that, how many beers would you have in you before you would find an alternative to driving home? Let's assume a 15-20 minute drive on residential streets - no freeways involved.

If you respond, please note your height, weight, and what type of driinker you are (eg lightweight, social/moderate, heavy, binge) for reference.

(if someone could edit the poll to say "do you have in you" instead of "you in you", that would be great)

doesn't this depend on how much time passes (as you noted)? I mean someone could drink 5 beers over a 6 hour party and be fine.. I'm not gonna vote cause everyone will interpret that differently..

After my wife and I were hit by a drunk driver on Thanksgiving 2002, the answer to that question is 0-1 drinks.

Before that, well, I'd rather not say. A lot. I was younger.

Now I live in NYC...I dont drive. I get ****ty and take cabs home.

I don't drink. I've seen it ruin too many lives even in moderation. I have no ill feelings towards those who do, however.

I've always told my friends that if they have any question as to whether they're able to drive or not to give me a call. I've been to the scenes of accidents involving drunk drivers. Once you see first hand what can happen even after 1 drink, you realize that it's just not worth it.

You didnt specify the duration of drinking.

But if I show up at a party at 10 and go home at 2:30, I would feel comfortable drinking 5 beers and driving.

as mentioned, it depends on how much time passes. because of that factor, i didnt vote.

im 6'2'' and 175 lbs. - when i go out i usually have no more than 2-3 beers over the course of a couple hours and i do drive home. however, these days i usually dont even drive downtown - im a 7 minute bike ride from downtown. i rarely go out to get really drunk (just assume stay home or over at friends), but if i am i dont even think about driving - i live close enough to downtown where i can walk home in half an hour or so, or get a ride from friends.

i have been drunk enough to make myself not drive, but honestly i have also driven when i definately shouldnt have - trying not to do that anymore.

i drive after drinking pretty frequently.... often when i've had far more than 5 drinks. however, i rarely drive more than 4 or 5 miles. growing up, driving ****faced was the norm, so it's a habit i'm trying to wane myself off of.

although, in all honesty, i have fun driving while buzzed. much more so than when sober.

    am i a bad person?

There's alot of variables that play into this.

But just a normal situation I have no problem drinking 7-9 beers over the course of a football game than driving home about 10 minutes to my house from my favorite bar.

Now if I'm on foreign ground like this weekend in Dallas I will drink very little if I have to drive.

Also any time I have to drive on the freeway Ill also drink very little ....

I know my limit when it comes to driving, I've called friends on a couple occasions to get a ride. I wont lie I messed up before but lucklily I didnt hurt myself or anybody else. I wont make that mistake again...

I don't drink anymore so my answer is none. I encourage all my friends that do drink to call me, no matter the time, if they need a ride.

I'm the same way....I drive about 5min back to my house.

I'm 5'11", 165. I drive about 5min home from the bars. I would never drink more than a drink or so if I was having to be on freeways, or in an area I didn't know.

I didn't vote because you have to take into account the amount of time that elapses...

but as an example, I was at a party last night from about 11pm until 3am. I had 3 beers from the time I arrived until 1am. I did not drink after that and was more than fine to drive home.

i'm 5'9" 205 lbs. after a 4 hour party, i'd feel comfortable driving after 5 beers. anything more than i'd be buzzing hard. for a guy my size i'm not that good at holding my alchohol.

There are all kinds of studies, shows, etc. on this topic...A lot depends on your tolerance and weight...When I was younger, I probalby drank too much and on occasion, still drove...WTF was I thinking...Now a lot more mature, I would say about 3-5 beers and I know its too much...I try not to do that as I know my limitations...

6'1" 220 and no way would I drive after more than 1 beer w/i the same hour.

I have young children, the drivers in the other car may have children, and there may be children in their car.
