I think appreciation is different for different people. I appreciate some of the stuff on Kid A because I'll listen to it and the song will have some horns or whatever that it never would have dawned on me to put into a song. So I think of it as original and creative. I know that it isn't like anything else in rock music that is out there right now. I just admire that they thought to use that, and wonder with marvel at where it came from. But it still seems like it fits in, in a kind of jazz type of way.

Then on another song I might be listening to the beat, and wonder where that meter for the song came from. I am do a lot of drumming, but it will take me awhile to figure out the meter. Then I admire how on top of that the other musicians fit their parts so nicely over the odd tempo. Then again I ask how many other bands are doing that now, and I appreciate Radiohead's originality and creativity.

I like hooks and melody a lot too. My favorite Radiohead stuff has that, but some songs the hooks and melody are there, but just kind of hidden or it might a take awhile for me to get my head around. I appreciate that as well in a band.

If I am going to have to choose to listen to a song with a great hook and melody, or one that I don't think has hook or melody but is creative, I will usually choose hook and melody.

There are exceptions, and also the attitude and energy behind the music have something to do with that.

I don't know if I can explain it any more than that. But either way, it doesn't matter. What is really cool is that you are a fan of music and making an effort to get a deeper understanding of something.

That is probably more effort than I ever put in at understanding people's love for Beck. So I applaude it.

    Franchise,

Do you listen to Sigur Ros? The way I got into Radiohead was kinda linked to them. Back in the day when Manny would post lots of stuff I asked him about Radiohead, he told me if I liked Sigur Ros I would like Kid A. I looked into Kid A and found I liked it a lot.

I love Radiohead. I really couldnt get into them at first, after listening to Kid A and OK Computer I learned to appreciate them more. Im still listening to Thom Yorke's Erasure album that came out a while back....good stuff.
There are plenty of places to find good bands and the radio isnt one of them.

this is an old solo performance, but still good

honestly I have had only limited exposure to Sigur Ros. The first time I listened to it I didn't really like it. The next time I heard it I did. But I have never pursued it any further.

I have to admit it was almost a concience decision on my part. Sometimes I get a stupid stubborn streak and instinctually try not to listen to the next hip thing. I was kind of doing that Sigur Ros, for some reason. I know it doesn't make sense, but I couldn't help myself.

I guess enough time has passed that I should check them out more now.

Don't lament too much, Man. I hope things are adjusting and you guys are making progress towards unerstanding and happiness. Once that gets worked out, the boards will still be here and you can let your daily post counts slowly creep back up.

I do miss your frequent posts and discussions on music and whatever else, but especially music. Anyway, I hope all is going well, and the boards will always be here so that should be the least of your worries.

I guess it kind of depends on what you're looking to get out of the music. In your first post vwiggin, you mentioned the lyrics and not getting what Radiohead was going at with their songs. For me, I enjoy listening to music more for the overall sound or at a show the overall experience than I do just listening to the lyrics or just listening to the guitars or just listening to the drums or just getting into the crowd.

For the most part, I like the overall sound of Radiohead and don't really pay attention to the lyrics.

OK, I thought it was just me.

A lot of times, especially in these music threads, the more I hear about how great a band is, the less inclined I am to want to check them out. I can't really explain why, I'm just stubborn like that. I like my bands and I just don't have time to check out your bands. It's weird, but that's how I feel sometimes.

Maybe I want to discover music on my own instead of through other people. Maybe it means more to me when I discover it on my own. When I really love them because I discovered them, not because all the hip people told me about them. It just seems more genuine to me.

Maybe I'm missing out on a lot of good music feeling this way, but the stubbornness in me just doesn't care.....for now, anyway.

This is my favorite video from the Eraser album. Even if you don't like Thom Yorke, just watch the first 45 seconds to watch the great stare.

It looks and sounds like the special education talent show at the high school cafeteria to me.

Thanks dude. It has been an incredible struggle and there have been many times where it has run through my mind that I made a huge mistake. Yet, last night the wife and me were alone and we had a really good evening together. The first one in a long while (and that includes the recent vacation went on).

The biggest problem between us is that we have some radical disagreements on certain things and it has been hard for us to meet in the middle about it. It has also been hard for me to get used to not having much "alone" time anymore. My wife has finally figured that one out - that I need some time to myself from time to time and she has acquiesed (sp?), although I feel she has done it somewhat reluctantly. I'm currently at the office right now (it is only 5 minutes from my house) and that is really the only time I have to post these days. When I am at home, there are just too many things to do around the house and unfortunately, posting on the BBS takes a backseat. What is going to suck a lot too is that I am going to be pretty busy with work (for a change) until mid December. So, I don't know how much I will be able to post during the day. But thanks again for the kind words of encouragement - it means a lot to me.

    Pink Floyd?

It's not very original or creative if a previous band has done it and done it to it's limits. Even if that was then and this is now, it's been done.

The only difference : Floyd= jazz, classical, blues Radiohead= new wave, punk and electronica

Different styles of sounds, different technological access, same approach, same experiment, same rehashed musical ideology.

Oh and I do like Radiohead, let's just not start calling them entirely original. And, for the record, I'm not a music snob. I just cringe when people get overzealous with their favorite bands and start handing out "genius" titles like free candy.

i don't get the hate. the guy is ernest and lets his freak flag fly. i concur that radiohead is great live and even though they are not my favorite i do like them/him and think the best is yet to come. i'm no musician but it seems to me that melody is his strongest suit, maybe his is not so straight-forward and easy to recognize, dunno, he seems to be incorporating some of the sonic innovations of electronica and melding them with traditional keyboard playing. he's got a lot of intergrity, he's one of those that's definately in it for the music rather than fame or money, kudos.

I'm not going to say that everything they have done comes out of the blue. But I think they did it differently than Floyd. They have different sounds and different tempos even than Pink Floyd did.

I don't mean to take away from Pink Floyd's innovativeness. But I also don't think that they take away from Radiohead's.

i wouldn't compare radiohead with pink floyd, maybe closer to spiritualized? i'm not into radiohead at all though.

imo they're overhyped and just fashionable. they mightn't be as popular in the US. elsewhere they're the backstreet boys of indie rock, that's how popular they are.

The Eraser is the best album that's come out in a long, long time. Analyse is perhaps my favorite track from it, too, and while Thom is an interesting live performer, it sounded better on the disc imo. From start to finish, I like The Eraser better than any other CD Radiohead has made.

I was a bit late to get into Radiohead, but I'm glad I did eventually. OK Computer is a terrific album. There are definitely some tracks on their albums that fail to capture my fancy, but there are certainly some that are among my favorites of all groups.
